Why I'm Against Black History Month

We need to be learning about everybody's history. Ask the time and give everyone the same respect.

Why I'm Against Black History Month
Kristin Bass

As many people have probably figured out by now, February is black history month. It is the month in which we recognize everything accomplished by African Americans throughout history. A month long dedication to those who are African Americans who crave the same respect as the Americans that are white.

I don't necessarily have anything against black history month per say, but I don't think it's right that we set aside only one month of the year to give African Americans the respect that they deserve. What about the other eleven months out of the year? Is it really acceptable to treat a certain group of people with disrespect eleven months out of the month, but turn around and treat them with some respect the one remaining month out of the year just because it is dedicated to the history of their race? That's not how it should be. All year round we celebrate the history of white Americans. We celebrated the freedom we have here in America. But yet African Americans only get one month out of the year because of their skin color and because if their race.

Everybody has history, no matter what color their skin is, no matter what ethnicity they are. White Americans aren't even native to America, so why should we celebrate year round what or history is when we can't do it for African Americans as well? Unless someone is a genuine Native American, their history did not start here in America.

We should treat everyone the same and give them all the same respect because we are all unique, we all have unique history. We need to start learning about the history of all races and find everyone the same respect. We shouldn't have a month out of the year where it is acceptable to learn about the history of the race, then go the rest of the year acting like their history isn't important.

Everyone should be proud of who they are and where they come from. No one should be disrespected for who they are or where their ancestors come from. Everyone should be able to celebrate who they are, and be able to celebrate year round.

Just imagine if we were to start treating anyone and everyone who is not a native American the same way we treat African Americans now. Im positive that the largest majority of us would be treated with disrespect in some way or another for being "foreigners" in this country. This country is known as being a melting pot because we have people who have ancestors who come from all over the world who came to America for many different reasons.

We should stop with this division of color of skin and ethnicity and stay treating everyone with the same respect year round.

I'm not against the meaning behind black history month, but I'm against us only dedicating a month to the cause instead of having the mentality behind black history month all year round.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
