Why I'll Never Keep Up With The Kardashians

Obsessing over women who solely care about fame and beauty is not something I choose to keep up with.

Why I'll Never Keep Up With The Kardashians

"We're not big fans of the word famous," the Kardashian sisters say in Kardashian Konfidential. "Or really, we should say we're not big fans of using it when we talk about ourselves. It makes us sound conceited.”

Too late, that statement already made you sound conceited.

I understand watching the infamous show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians is a lot of Americans ‘guilty pleasure.' I’ll be the first to admit that it is entertaining seeing them make fools of themselves or talk like petty 13-year-olds on national television. Sure, maybe for an hour if that. But the real question is why do people care enough about their lives to actually keep up with them? There is so much more out there, so much more enriching, and enhancing shows on television. Why don't we watch something that will actually stimulate our brains instead of diminish them?

My dad used to tell me that watching too much television would make my brain squishy and I believed him up until I was about 10. I am now 20 and I once again believe my dad in this instance. The Kardashians make my brain squishy.

I've heard way too many people ask why the Kardashians are famous, or why Kim Kardashian in particular is so famous. Turns out, all this fame came from her sex tape that brushed across the internet where everyone and their mothers have seen it. Unfortunately. Kim admitted to E! News that she wanted to be famous on reality TV since she was 12, and lucky for her dreams really do come true. Wait, I thought you didn't like to use the word famous?

We become so focused on the fame and beauty aspect of life that we forget about the more important things. Why don't we religiously watch CNN, the Animal Planet, or the History Channel? We should care more about the things that impact us instead of the 'Kardashian Lip Kit' industry. Especially now, when the US and even the world, are more vulnerable than they have ever been before is why we should focus on things that are beneficial.

The one episode I actually watched was Kim on vacation with her previous husband Chris. She lost her $75,000 pair of earrings in the ocean and had a fit about it. 75k pays for my college tuition. If I lost 75k worth of earrings I would not only have a fit, but I would commit suicide. That's more money than I've even had the pleasure to look at! The difference is I would never own 75k earrings, nor would I ever wear them to a vacation in the ocean. She had that one coming.

After that despicable episode, I couldn't bare to watch a 35-year-old woman cry like a 13-year-old in the Bahamas. It wasn't entertaining to me. To those who religiously watch the show, to each their own. But for me, even thinking about them makes me angry. I mean come on people, who files for divorce after 72 hours of marriage if they didn't want publicity for it? The Kardashians are obsessed with themselves, and obsessed with being ‘famous’ even though they claim to hate the word.

I refuse to be a paparazzi for someone who doesn't deserve to be as famous as they are. I would rather obsess over those who make a difference in our world.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
