Why Having a Summer Birthdays in College is Fun

In high school, having a summer birthday was never fun, in college however it became the complete opposite.

In high school having a summer birthday was one of my least favorite things. I was already younger than everyone in the grade I was supposed to be in and there was never any of talk about what people were doing for their summer birthdays. In elementary school there was never a separate party for my birthday, I was always grouped together with all of the other kids who had "summer birthdays." When I got to college however, I realized that just as everything else having a summer birthday became a lot more fun and way more beneficial.

1. You wish your friends were there but they don't have to be

When you get to college you make friends from all over the country, depending on what college you go to. Some of your best friends, like mine, live in completely different states and won't always be able to come celebrate your birthday with you but it's okay. Plan to do something before school gets out or plan a fun trip for everyone to meet to celebrate because having a summer birthday means more flexibility and more ability to plan trips and events.

2. It is a great time for a "high school reunion"

After all of your friends and you have split up to go to different colleges for 4 years, coming home for the summer is normally the only time everyone is home. Pick up the phone, call your old friends you haven't seen in forever and go out. You'll be glad you called, they'll be glad to hear from you and everyone will be surprised about how much you each have changed.

3. Family birthdays will become even more fun

If you have a birthday during the school year it more than likely means that you can't go home for your birthday depending on where you live. If you have a summer birthday however, you will already be home to celebrate your birthday with your whole family and by the time you get home from the school year it will definitely be a warmly welcomed family event.

4. You won't have to stress about school

Just as in high school you won't have to worry about having a test on your birthday or about having a paper due the day after your birthday. This means that you can celebrate your birthday when you want and not have to worry about your grades suffering or worry about missing class the day of your birthday or the day after. You also won't have to wake up for class early or stay up late writing a paper or studying, you can relax all day and sleep or just hang out with your friends and family.

5. You can take spontaneous trips

If your birthday falls in the summer that means that during college the only thing you may have to worry about missing is work. This means that without the stress of school, you can pack your stuff up, hit the road, and take a random road trip to see some of your friends that live far away or even meet them in a random location to get away and have fun.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
