Even if you don’t watch Grey’s Anatomy you have heard the term “my person.” Your person is your best friend times ten. They’re your other-half, the person you call when you need help hiding the body. The person who knows you better than anyone. The person who believes in you and knows you can handle anything life throws at you, but doesn’t let you do it alone. This person is someone you can’t live without, but what happens when you have more than one person? Is that even possible? The answer is yes, and I know this because I am lucky enough to have not one, but four people that I am lucky enough to be able to call “my person."
1) My sister.
My little sister Shannon is better than me in every way. I know older sisters are supposed to teach and be the role models, and I know that I am to her, but I’m not sure if she knows that she’s also one to me. She has taught me so much about life and what it means to love someone unconditionally. She has been there through my absolute worst experiences and never fails to remind me how proud she is of me. Growing up we have always been close, and as we get older the bond continues to get stronger and stronger. She’s the first person I call when something crazy happens, and the one I trust not to tell anyone. (And not just because I have blackmail!) The endless memories we have together are what gets me through school when I start to feel homesick, because all I have to do is think back to the last time I was home and there’s a memory in there that will send me into a laughing fit. Even if we weren’t sisters she would still be my best friend because she brightens my life in a way that no one else can. She’s my role model.
2) My roommate.
My roommate Julia is the sole reason my first year of college has been one of the most memorable experiences of my life. There’s really no way to describe her other than she is one of the greatest people I have come to know, and I mean that wholeheartedly. I know everyone says this, but I can assure you that I have the best roommate in the world. My roommate is the girl who I know wants to see me succeed, as she is always there with a smile and a hug when I do; but she is also the one who is there for the “what am I doing with my life?” talks at 2 a.m. Twice a week. I love her for helping me study all night for a test, for always laughing at my jokes, for always telling me the truth when I need to hear it. But, I also love her for the things she doesn’t do, like not judging when she walks in and I’m still in bed or when I eat a whole pint of ice cream after a good workout. Instead, she just laughs and comes to join me. We are so much alike in so many ways that it’s actually scary sometimes, which is why we get along so well; we get each other. She’s the one who can take one look at me and know exactly what I’m thinking without me having to say a word. I am forever thankful to be able to have her as my roomie. She’s my better half.
3) My twin.
Okay, so we’re not actually twins, but we do have the same name, so that’s close enough, right? My best friend Rachel is one of a kind, and for anyone who has had the pleasure of meeting her you’ll know exactly what I mean when I say that. She’s hands down the most hilarious person I know (besides myself), but that’s why we are so close because whenever we’re together we end up laughing so hard we cry. Rachel has, and continues to, carry me through life. The way we became friends was fast, and unexpected, but looking back I don’t know life without her. She is always there to restore my confidence and cheer me on with whatever I am pursuing because she’s my biggest fan. She believes in me when I don’t even believe in myself. She’s literally the definition of a ride or die bitch (for lack of a better term), because she’s there for me no matter what, and will always help me pick up my broken pieces when I need her to. She says she looks up to me, but the truth is I look up to her. Her care-free attitude and kind heart are something I’ve always envied. She’s my inspiration to be a better person.
4) My partner in crime.
My best friend MaKenna is the one who I’ve been friends with the longest. Our journey started our freshman year of high school when we were assigned to sit next to each other in homeroom. Since that day we have been inseparable, and I would not have gotten through high school without her. Through everything we’ve encountered together I know that there won’t ever be a time that we’re not best friends. Joining the debate team freshmen year, driving Mr. McLaughlin (and Mr. Webb, and Mrs. Reinsel) crazy in class, and every sleepover in between are the times that I promise I will never forget. It doesn’t matter where life takes us, because I know that my life wouldn’t be complete without her in it. She’s the one who can handle me on my worst and moodiest days (and there are plenty of them), but will still love me just the same. She’s that friend that you talk to everyday even on your busiest days, even if it’s just a text or two before bed. We watched each other grow up, and I truly believe that if I didn’t have her I would not be the person I am today, she made me better, and she made me stronger. I know that I can go to her for absolutely any problem, big or small, and she not only listens to me for hours, but she makes my problems, her problems. There aren’t enough words for me to explain the significance she has had to my life. She completes me.
If you have a person you're lucky, if you have more than one you're blessed. Having more than one person does not make any of them less special, as each one of them brings something different to my life.
