When I was in eighth grade, my mom allowed me to make a Facebook account. I was so excited because all my friends had them and I thought it was a cool way to keep in touch with family and friends from all over the country. Little did I know that it was just the start of an unhealthy habit.
After I got a Facebook, I thought, "What more do I need?" Then the Twitter machine came out and everybody jumped on that bandwagon. It was like Facebook in a way that you could just update your status whenever you want without clogging up everyone's news feeds. What I genius idea! People can favorite my tweets or they can even retweet them so their followers can see what I posted.
Then not much time after that when Instagram came along. This is awesome, you can post pictures and edit them to whatever you would like. People can like and comment on the picture. And the greatest part is that you felt closer to your favorite celebrities because they were always posting picture. It's the same way with Twitter. You can see what your favorite is posting and feel like they are talking to you like you're friends.
After Instagram was a huge hit, another app came out called Snapchat. You can take a picture of yourself or of other people. You can edit the pictures ever so slightly and send them to your friends. But here's the kicker, they can only see the picture for a max of 10 seconds and then its gone forever. It's really fun because you can take a funny picture of yourself and set it for only 3-4 seconds and your friends can't keep it and use it as blackmail. Unless they are very quick, and in that case they can screenshot it. So if you plan on running to be president of anything, ever.
Don't Snapchat embarrassing pictures of yourself. They may come back to bite you in the rear. Although social media can be a great way to keep in contact with people, keep up with sports, or anything you choose to do with your socials; it can also become a real anxiety attack for some people.
When it comes to social media, you can't really lie. I mean, of course you can always lie. But people forget that they had said they can't hang out with a friend until they get a text from said friend asking why you went out when you said you were staying home. That can become a real problem in relationships and friendships.
People will always get their feelings hurt because people forget who can and cannot see their pages and decide to post whatever they want. Not realizing how bad it's going to be just a few hours from your post. This is one of the main reasons why I don't like social media. There have been countless times where I have thought about deactivating my accounts because it's just too stressful.
People always get their feelings hurt. And going along with that, if you text someone and you don't hear back that can be really annoying. "Ok, you're probably busy doing stuff...oh wait, you've been on social media all day but you can't answer your phone or text me back. Cool, sorry I bothered you with my friendship."
Man, social media and technology are a real pain in the butt. But we really love to hate it. I mean come on, what would we do while in class or at work if we couldn't check Facebook or Twitter for a few minutes? Pay attention and get stuff done? That's ridiculous!
