My first semester of college, I was a lost child just trying to find a group of friends. I didn't know anyone at school and I liked it that way, but at the same time I didn't have a "home." Within the first month I heard about fall recruitment and I said, "why not? It can't hurt right?"
After a long and tiring week, I made it through. Barely, but I made it. No one in my family was in greek life, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I eventually got my bid to Phi Mu and did the whole bid day sha-bang.
First off, THERE ARE SO MANY SCREAMING GIRLS. Quite overwhelming, but still exciting! The whole day was all new to me. So after bid day I went home and felt exhausted, but also a sense of peace from all the anxiety college had given me.
Joining a sorority has changed who I am. Before college, I wasn't completely against greek life--I just didn't think it was going to be for me, but I was wrong. I like to be a part of an organization. I did sports in high school and loved having a group of people to go back to.
I have found some of my very best friends within my sorority. My sorority is 200 girls with close to the same values I hold in life. So chances are I am going to get along with most of these girls.
I would not have met these girls if it wasn't for my sorority. Not only have I met some of my friends for life, but it gave me an opportunity to be a leader. I currently serve as VP of Chapter Development. It is challenging, but I wanted a challenge. I am always looking for leadership and couldn't really find it anywhere else.
This position has already taught me better public speaking skills and lots and lots of organization. It has taught me that it is okay to ask for help. But the best part is leading a group of girls I respect so much.
I totally get why some may not want to be in greek life, as it isn't for everyone. I am not going to judge someone if they don't feel they would benefit from greek life, just like I expect someone to respect that I am in greek life.
This was the right choice for me. I really needed a core set of girls that I can go to any event and feel comfortable. It has changed how I feel about my school, and it truly has changed my life.
