Gen Z'ers, people born after the Millenials, are often referred to as "lazy" and mobile phone obsessed. We are always snap chatting and can have whatever we want right at our fingertips. However, there is so much more to us than that. If Generation Z realized how much they truly impact the fate of this world, a lot of good could be done.
We may not always be go-doers, but we are most certainly do-gooders. We want to make a difference. According to CMO newsletter, 60% of my generation wants their jobs to impact the world, 26% volunteer and 76% are concerned about humanity's impact on the planet! We care so much, but we are so connected to everything through social media at such an early age that we become convinced we are making a difference by posting about our worries on Facebook.
Although all this media and technology can be easily viewed as negative (with good reason), having access to all the knowledge we desire can make us majorly influential. We have grown up during the worst economic recession in history, we are surrounded by terrorist activity and traumatic events, we see the dangers of global warming all around us, etc. We are having to grow up extremely fast and therefore are developing an awareness like no other generation has. We see ourselves as the people who could very well solve some of these problems, and that makes us less afraid of chasing our dreams and pursuing careers that could help society.
We can be anything we want to be. The sky is the limit. Major issues with equality for gender, race and sexuality have always been at the forefront. Now, though, we have more ways than ever to expose these things and spread awareness. I have the ability to tell all of my 1400 friends on Facebook how I feel about issues I'm concerned about, and I can tell them all at once with the tap of a button. Generation Z has so much power. It's incredible, and it's extremely vital that we use the tools we are given to make a change, lend a helping hand, preach what matters, and more. We can fly to a country across the world and bring them supplies they need, things we take for granted every day. We can create apps for cell phones that help domestic violence victims discreetly call for help. We have better access to education so we can all be veterinarians or social workers or nurses. Open your eyes, we can do so much.
Every single generation before us was significant in their own way. From the invention of paper and pencil to the light bulb, from airplanes to cars, each person existing in their own chapter of time must fulfill their purpose. We sometimes don't realize the meaning of our life until we look back on it. Take the time you have now to truly look at yourself and what you're capable of. Your great, great, great grandparents did some amazing things I'm sure, and now it's your turn. It's our turn. Generation Z, get off of your couch. Get off of your phone, and go do something. Don't let yourself be the stereotype. You are so much more.
