I remember the first time I visited New York City. I was absolutely mesmerized. I was in 7th grade on a class trip, but in reality, it was us roaming the streets for hours; but that’s beside the point. I fell in love with every part of the city. This was when I decided that, one day, I was going to live in the city, and here I am seven years later. If you’ve never been to New York City, you won’t know what I’m talking about, but the city is very much alive and welcomes you with open arms.
There’s a reason people from all walks of life are attracted to the city. Nothing seems impossible. People flock here from all over the world. No dream is unattainable. The reality is everyone that comes to the city is trying to live out their dream. There is certainly no shortage of creativity in the city, which is what makes it amazing. Everyone seems to bounce off of each other’s ideas. Being in an atmosphere charged with so much positive energy is inspiring, which is what will make you want to be the best version of yourself.
Living in the city means that there is literally always something to do. Sure, the winters are cold but you get used to it because your mama didn’t raise a quitter. Plus, the city looks beautiful in the snow. A book can be indulged in Central Park, a walk can be enjoyed on the Highline, a visit to the MoMA will meet all of your creative needs. There is something for everyone, trust me.
Did I mention that the food here is literally to die for? I’m always raving to my family about how amazing Shake Shack is and how the bagels at home just don’t seem to compare to my local bagel shop. I highly recommend checking out the Nutella store. If you’re as much of a Nutella fanatic as I am, you will not be disappointed. I’ve also noticed that the most unlikely restaurants always seem to have the best food, but that’s always how it works, right? You can also count on $1 pizza becoming a staple in your diet.
Another great thing about the city is that the magic of it never seems to fade. I still find myself staring out taxi windows in awe that I actually live here - this is the place I get to call home. The Empire State Building is still picture worthy and Times Square still makes me cringe but that’s never going to change. No, the noise doesn’t bother me anymore and yes, I’m used to the weird smells I encounter walking down the street.
There is also a certain sense of accomplishment that comes with taking the correct subway for the first time without consulting the map. Being able to know exactly where a place is just by hearing the address is also very exciting, at least for me. It’s like you actually live here, amazing. You see, I come from a small town, so living in the big city is a dream for many, but not many people go after that dream.
I think that it’s important to get out of your comfort zone and leave home, at least for a little while. You will find out a lot about yourself and discover what you truly want out of your life. New York City will either make or break you – in the best way possible.
