We live in a society that is centered around capturing the moment. If something worth remembering is happening, someone, somewhere, is taking a picture or a video of it, usually on his or her iPhone. And while having that quick ability to pull out your phone whenever you want to take a picture of something is great, the quality isn't always there. How do you get good quality photos? Buy a real camera.
A year and a half ago, I made the decision to invest in a real camera, and it was the best decision ever. It is something I think every college student should splurge on, and here are a few reasons why.
1. Quality
Clearly one of the main reasons to spend hundreds of dollars on a piece of technology is for its quality. If you want clear and well-focused photos, a real camera is ideal. Whether you're studying abroad or going to a nice birthday dinner with friends, using a real camera to take better quality photos will not only benefit you, but everyone around you. Not to mention looking back on high-quality photos from moments of your life helps you gain a better appreciation for the details you might have missed.
2. Variety
One of the best parts about buying a camera is that there are so many brand and type varieties to choose from. There's Fujifilm, Canon, Nikon, Sony, and many more. Yes, options can be overwhelming, but they give you the ability to find the best-fit camera for you. Obviously, before any purchase, you would do some research, so don't stop doing that here. Take some time to find out what you like, what you don't, what fits your budget, and what does not. You might really want a camera with a detachable lens that can also take panoramas, but you don't know until you look.
3. Creativity
Everyone needs a creative outlet, especially college students. Photography is a great way to get in touch with your creative side. Anyone can be a photographer if you can press a button. Being behind the lens is a great way to get a better understanding of the world and people around you. YOU say what gets photographed and what does not. And what YOU may find interesting to photograph, another photographer may not. That's the beauty of photos. You can think of it almost as a real life Instagram (not to mention you can actually step your Insta-game up by posting creative pics).
There are so many more reasons why college students should buy real cameras. But I'm going to leave it up to you to find them out. Borrow your artsy friend's camera for an hour and play around with it, or go out and buy your own. You'll not only feel more in touch with the world around you, but more in touch with your own thoughts. When you take pictures of something, they're there forever, engraved in your mind and the world. Cool idea to think about.
