So just the other day (Friday the 13th to be exact) the worst thing ever happened to me: I had to move back into a dorm. For some this is just part of college, but for me I’ve been fortunate enough to avoid dorms for the past year by living in my sorority’s house. I would have continued to stay there except that housing won’t let me stay there during the summer, so I had to pack my bags and move out of my spacious house into a tiny dorm room. Everything about this dorm life is just awful and I’m sure everyone can agree with these top reasons.
1. I have to eat, sleep, study, watch TV, and everything else in one room.
Literally I don't understand how people live like this.
2. It smells awful.
What do people do that makes it permanently smell this bad?
3. There is not enough space for anything.
This is how I felt moving in and trying to get everything to fit.
4. Sharing a tiny bathroom with strangers.
I don't know who these people are, but I'm supposed to share a shower with them? Already not happy with this situation then they go and steal the toilet paper.
5. People down the hall want to be best friends with you.
I moved in here because I had to, not to make friends.
6. I have to sneak past the RAs with my wine.
If I'm learning nothing but physics for six weeks straight, I might need a drink
7. The walls are so thin you can hear what everyone around you is saying.
I don't want to hear every detail of your life through a wall.
8. There are fire alarms in the middle of the night.
Past 10:00 p.m. is quiet hours so pointless fire alarms should follow that rule too, just saying.
9. This entire building seems like it hasn't been cleaned since 1972.
Seriously how hard is it to sweep the room or dust off the dresser before you move out?
10. There is only one kitchen for the whole building and no one seems to understand that they need to clean up after themselves.
I'm pretty sure they figure that if everyone else makes a mess then it's okay.
11. The walls are plain and white, we have someone monitoring us every hour of the day, and we're segregated by gender. Sounds a lot like prison to me.
But really though, the similarities do go on and on.
Anyone who lives in these conditions year round I applaud you because I couldn't do it anymore. So this summer I will just have to endure the dorm life and be thankful that I get to move back into a house in the fall.
