Girls grow up hearing fantastical, magical stories about the lives of young girls just like them who become princesses overnight. How they live happily ever after, safe, sound, and cherished beyond their wildest dreams. How do the girls in these stories become happy little princesses? Why they’re saved by a prince of course! He comes sweeping in on a white horse and saves her from peril or rescues her from the drudgery of everyday working life. He makes her feel loved, adored, safe and, most of all, special. He convinces her that she is a diamond in the rough, a precious treasure, one that he is the first to see.
Now I love a good fairytale just as much as the rest of you. My question is, are those stories setting unrealistic expectations? Ladies, let’s be honest. We’ve all had that run in with the knight in shining tin foil. He’s wonderful, kind and caring … until we see the pretty picture we painted. We see his exterior for what it really is. Tin foil, a hasty wrap job trying to hold in the odor of his crappy personality. You’re probably thinking I’m being a little harsh, right? Hold on just a moment and let me explain.
From an early age, we are inundating our young girls with tales of a “prince” who will sweep them off their feet and carry all their troubles away. We are fostering the idea that a guy
Well darn, what the heck are we supposed to do now? Let me tell you about a King whose crown won’t melt away when times get tough. Instead of making our daughters think some phony prince is what she needs to live a happy life, we should be telling them about the King says they are His beloved daughters and thereby heirs of a glorious kingdom. I’m talking about Jesus, guys! The Prince of Peace who loves each and every one of us so much that He died for us. He is the prince we should be telling our little girls to pursue!
That all sounds nice, but how is that going to do our daughters any good? An earnest pursuit of God will lead your daughter to a godly man. The kind of man who will love, cherish, protect, respect and provide for her like she deserves! Pursuing God will point her in the direction to find and follow His path for her life. The one that will enable her to have a steady place to live, a good fulfilling job and, most importantly, she will be happy and cared for.
Remind her that she is already a princess in the eyes of the Lord. She is loved, cherished, protected, respected and provided for by the King of Kings who delights to welcome her into His kingdom. Yes, tell her of that fairy tale, of her fairy tale. And she will truly live happily ever after.
