Why Do We Always Settle?

Stop settling for anything less than what you want

Why Do We Always Settle?

Why does society find it okay to settle? Why do people settle for things less than the best? The answer is not easy, and the answer is different for everyone. Often times you will find that society is scared or they do not think they can find better. I am not only talking about settling for that guy who has nothing going for him, but I am also talking about that burger you ordered that didn't meet your standards. We often times find ourselves eating something even though they got our order wrong. And why is that? Are we too afraid of being mean? Are we afraid of what they may say? Or are we just too nice?

The answer is never simple and there will always be different and changing answers. So I am not here to give you answers or ask you for them. I am here to tell you to stop. It is OK to send your food back if it is not what you ordered. It is OK to leave your partner if they do not meet your standards. Some may say your standards are too high, but people who say that are people who settle themselves. If you know what you want, do not settle for less. It may seem like the simple thing to do, but once you are put in a situation where you need to take control and do what is best for you and to better yourself it can be tricky. Do not settle for that C in your hard class. Work hard and get that A, you can do it. It may take a lot of work, but you can do it. We settle for that C because we think that is what we deserve or all we have the ability to get, but if you stop settling for easy and you push yourself to be the best, you can get that A.

It is hard to make decisions that betters yourself. And many may say it is selfish, but honestly it is not. In order to live to the fullest and truly be happy you need to shoot for what is best for you. Shoot for that dream job, don't settle for a lower one. Go for the things that will make you the happiest, the things that will push you to be better everyday. The day you stop reaching for the stars is the day you settle. And that is the day you lose who you are. If you settle for what is easy or what you think is the only thing you can get, you lose a part of yourself, you lose your drive to be a better person, you lose the joy in life, and you lose the young and hopeful you.

As we get older it gets harder and harder but look around you, look at the people who work everyday for what they have. They did not settle and neither should you. It is 2016, it is time to live for yourself and never give up on your dreams, there are so many opportunities out there waiting for you. You just have to go look for them and do not stop or look back until you get there.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
