If you're not familiar, WCBS FM, otherwise known as 101.1 or New York's Greatest Hits, is a New York radio station that plays oldies and all time greatest hits. For the past three years I've been at the same job and the same radio station has been playing, CBS FM. Now, I know what you're thinking, that I probably hate this station because of the music but that isn't the case at all. I grew up on classic rock music and my parents always played The Beatles, Bon Jovi, Queen, etc. around my house. So if you're thinking that I hate this station because all they play are the same 15 songs over and over again and I've had to listen to them for the past 3 years, you're incorrect. Although that would be a good enough reason to have a particularly strong feeling against this station, my actual disdain is because of their bigoted and pompous hosts of the morning show.
Aside from their very narrow-minded and views on sensitive topics, these hosts of the morning show (whose names I do not care to learn) are rude, insensitive, and just plain out mean. I understand that radio hosts poke fun at celebrities as much as they can for our entertainment but there are certain lines that people should just not cross, ever. On two separate occasions these hosts have gone WAY over what I deem as acceptable humor and I think it's absolutely ridiculous.
The first time I got incredibly angry with the morning show was after Prince died. The morning after his death the morning show announcers were not only belittling his death but also belittling him as an artist. My mother, who was always very fond of Prince has played his music time and time again in our house, so when I heard what these people were saying about him I was furious. Not only did they reluctantly play one of and complained about having to do so, they said things like "I guess we should play one of his few songs that are decent" and even went as far to say they don't understand why it's a big deal that he died. They called him a junky and poked fun at his death. They said he wasn't a talented artist and were clearly not interested in even remotely trying to seem like they cared. Aside from the fact that I do believe Prince was incredibly talented, he is a HUMAN BEING. There is a line to be drawn and making fun of someone dying and playing it off lightly is just not something that should be done.
Being a dramatic person, I do tend to get angry at certain things that I probably shouldn't be so mad about, so I tried to brush off the Prince situation and put my views aside. Last week however, I heard something that was the last straw.
For those of you who may not know, Kim Kardashian was robbed at gunpoint in her Paris apartment over the last weekend. She was gagged and tied up and then locked in her bathroom while the robbers held her at gunpoint and stole her ring along with another box of jewelry. Wether you are a fan of Kim's or hate her, this is not something you should wish on any human being. HOWEVER the hosts of WCBS FM decided this would be the perfect time to crack some more insensitive jokes! While reporting the story on the morning show, one host was saying what exactly happened and when she got up to saying that Kim was tied up and her mouth taped shut, another host in the background started chiming in saying "good" and laughing in the background. If that weren't enough the topic resurfaced about an hour later. When retelling the story, the female host explained that her engagement ring (worth $4 million) along with another box of jewelry which sources say is worth another $6 million, the hosts in the background were not only laughing but got on the microphones to say sarcastically "poor baby, losing her engagement ring again" and making light of a very serious situation. They laughed throughout telling the entire story, and showed absolutely no compassion towards this woman. It does not matter if you hate Kim Kardashian with every fiber of your being, she is a mother, a daughter and a person who had a terrible thing done to her. I bet that if this happened to the Queen of England the radio hosts wouldn't be poking fun at her, or who knows maybe they would be.
In conclusion, the hosts at WCBS FM 101.1, New York's Greatest Hits, are insensitive, bigoted, rude and over the line. Their insensitivity and lack of compassion on serious matters are absolutely uncalled for and disgusting and in my opinion, have no right saying the things they have said. When I leave my job I will not be listening to their radio station and I urge everyone else not to either because they have no idea how to talk to or about human beings.
