Why I Decided To Start Making Music

The reason behind my greatest passion.

Why I Decided To Start Making Music
Adam Carter

Music has always been what I loved since I could really understand it. I always loved the aspects of music and how the chords and songs are put together. I never knew how to really make music when I was younger but I always wanted to make a song. For the longest time in middle school, I would just do some covers and see where I could go with that. The first cover song I made, I released my 8th-grade year. The song was to this girl that I had feelings for, and I really didn't know what to say to her in person. So I wanted to let YouTube do the work for me. As cliche as that may sound, I felt that was the better way to go about the situation. But this was just the beginning of how I started to make music and why I decided to.

The reason I decided to pursue music is because I wanted to make something of myself. I first started recording songs my freshman year of high school in 2009. I wanted to start making music mainly because I was pretty depressed at this time. I didn't feel comfortable in my own skin and I didn't know what to do. So I started writing songs to clear my mind and help me cope. I also wanted to start this music for my mother. My mother has provided for me, supported me with all my goals and aspirations, and has been through so much in her life. I just want to pay her back everything she deserves. Now that I am older I feel that I am so much better with my music and I have so much to talk about now. My wordplay, flow, and how I create my songs is so diverse and I love the sound that I am coming into. The main topics my songs really relate to are relationships, fallen flings, things that I want to recreate, or just life in general and my goals. Thus, far I am most proud of "Joint", a song you can find on Soundcloud under the handle "YangGang_AC".

At the end of the day, I just hope my dreams and aspirations with my own music can become a reality for me. I want to make my mother proud and set her up for life. I want to prove everyone wrong, to show that I have what it takes to make it. Music is my passion, the reason why I am in school and earning my degree and I hope everyone can take this ride with me.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
