Why Comedy Is So Important

Laughter really is the best medicine.

Everyone has their own way of taking care of their mental health. It can be almost anything, like reading or listening to music. For me, it has always been comedy. Whenever I’m sad, anything that can make me laugh almost instantly cheers me up. It brightens my day and makes me feel as though everything will be ok when times are rough. I usually get my comedy fix from one 3 outlets- comics, audio stand-up comedy, and tv/movies. All are effective, what I use depends on where I am and how accessible it is.

Comic books are great when I have down time, and my extensive collection of Dennis the Menace and Calvin and Hobbes comic books are always there for me when all else fails. The one-liners in particular always crack me up no matter what kind of day I’m having. I would be lying if I said that sometimes I don’t know where I’d be without my comic books.

Most of the time, the most convenient way for me to get my comedy fix is to just listen to it. All I need is my phone and earbuds and I’m set! It’s the perfect way to cheer myself up while literally doing almost anything.

Watching a funny show or movie definitely takes the most time, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less helpful. Sometimes, there’s nothing better than getting in bed and watching my favorite comedy movie or sitcom on Netflix.

Comedy always cheers me up, no matter where I’m getting it from!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
