The latest Nintendo Direct aired on Thursday, Nov.12, and we got more exciting details on some of the most anticipated games of 2015 and 2016. But the biggest surprise of them all (or not) came at the end of the Direct where Nintendo announced a new DLC for "Smash 4," someone who was really popular but not on the Smash Ballot. The space graphics made us think Wolf was finally coming back, but it was none other than Cloud from "Final Fantasy."
Many people naturally freaked out, but I have a few reasons as to why Cloud wouldn’t fit into "Smash."
We already have plenty of sword fighters. Between Link and all of the Fire Emblem characters, pretty much every sword move is covered, so it would be difficult to put together a moveset for Cloud without copying some of their abilities (and we already have the Mii Sword Fighter for that). We already know he’s going to have the same final smash as Ike, which isn’t a good sign. How many of his attacks can he get from his game that’ll be unique to just him? Just as we have plenty of sword fighters, we also have plenty of pretty boy characters in the game. (Please refer to the Brawl Taunts clip below -- skip to 1:47).
It’s awesome to have "Final Fantasy" represented in Smash, but there were a few other characters Nintendo could have picked, such as Tifa or the Black Mage (I know, that’s going way back). I personally think Lightning is cool, but if "Final Fantasy" only gets one rep, obviously it has to be a classic character. Cloud may be the face of the "Final Fantasy" franchise, but that shouldn’t make him the obvious choice. If anything, it’s too obvious. Choosing someone from "Final Fantasy" was definitely a good idea on Nintendo’s part – they should have just picked a different character, is all.
Of course, a lot of people wanted Cloud to be in "Smash Bros." for a while now, and Nintendo probably planned his inclusion long before they aired the Direct. They knew Cloud was getting in at some point, so it was only a matter of time. In any case, we now have one more character we can either main or beat the stuffing out of. There are still two more empty character slots in the game’s data, so we’ll have to see who gets in next. The speculation may continue until the next Nintendo Direct, but who really knows anymore?
What do you think of Cloud getting into "Smash"? Are you going to play as him? Which character would you like to see added as DLCs? Find out on the next "Dragonball Z!"
…Or just tell us in the comments. That works too.
