Why I Chose to Leave Home for College

The Best Choice I've Ever Made

12
Why I Chose to Leave Home for College
  1. My Major. Not many colleges in South Carolina have my major. That was a huge decision factor for the college of my choice. There wasn’t a college near my home, so I pretty much had to move. Although, I did consider going to a college closer to my home for two years, then transferring.
  2. The Freedom. With moving out comes freedom -- lots of it. I knew that if I stayed home, I’d probably still be treated like I was in high school. Moving out means I get to decide when to eat, when to wash my clothes (probably not until I only have one outfit left), how late to stay out, how early to wake up, if I should skip class or not, etc. It’s the big responsibilities, so it was overwhelming to decide, but I knew I could handle it. It sure beats staying home and having a curfew and being yelled at when it’s not met.
  3. New Places, New Faces. I’m one of those people who loves adventure and exploring new places. So, moving away seemed like a great idea. I’d have a whole new town to explore and learn. A new place means new faces, too. I’m shy at first, so new faces seemed a bit scary. If I went to college near home, I’d know the majority of everyone, but moving away I would know nobody. New friends are a part of growing up, though, so I’m enjoying meeting new people no matter how scary it seems.
  4. It’s Not a Permanent Goodbye. Even though I moved away, it doesn’t mean that I can’t go home. I can go home on the weekends if I want, and I’ll come home on holidays. I didn’t say goodbye for four years, I said goodbye for a few weeks. Then, I’ll come home, see everyone, and say goodbye for a few more weeks. It’s kind of like the best of both worlds.
  5. I Can Start Over. Nobody knows me up here, so I can start fresh. In high school and my hometown, everyone already perceived me as something. As the volleyball player, as the yearbook editor, as the quiet girl, as the coach’s favorite, as the smart one, as the dumb one, however they saw me. Now, there’s not that preconceived notion. I can be who I want and that’s how people will see me.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
