When I got to college, I had a hard time finding my home or my group of people on campus. I didn't think I would be a good fit in Greek life because of my more tomboyish attitude. My biggest problem was that I saw a sorority as just a way to buy your friends. I learned quickly that is not what sororities are about. They are a sisterhood of girls that truly love one another, and are a great way to network within the college and the country. I admire women that can do the Greek life, but the Greek life didn't choose me. I did the spring rush, I met a lot of women that I am now friends with, but I was very unsure.
The night after rush, I prayed for God to lead me where I really needed to be, and the next day I didn't get a callback. I took it on the chin and moved on. I already had a home at the Wesley Foundation on my campus, but I really didn't realize that until I was knocked back to Earth. The Wesley Foundation on my campus was a nondenominational campus ministry that I had been going to since my freshman year, but I didn't realize how much it meant to me until I joined the leadership. The leadership team made me care more for the happenings in the Wesley Foundation. I also became the social media "master" and directed all social media posts.
In sororities, you make lifelong friends, but in campus ministry, you do too. You bond with people over service to the community, talking about God and just chilling sometimes. After becoming part of leadership, I also got the opportunity to move into the Wesley housing, and I now live with two of my best friends. Getting involved with the Wesley Foundation has also helped in my walk with Christ. When I first came to college, I hung out with a rougher crowd. In 1 Corinthians 15:33 it says "Don't be deceived, 'Bad Company corrupts good character.'"
I would not trade my friends for the world, but I did and said a lot of things that I now know were stupid. I was the good kid leaving high school; I had never been to a real party before, but when I got to college, I was out every weekend. I feel like I made the right choice by choosing Wesley because it keeps me on the straight and narrow. I raise my hands at worship songs now, instead of fist pumping at a frat house. I've learned more about myself at the Wesley than I think I ever would in a sorority, but that is just me.
Joining Greek life doesn't mean you party, and being involved with campus ministry doesn't mean you don't. There are opportunities within both organizations. I love my Wesley Foundation because it is my home away from home, and everyone's home is different. You also do not have to choose one or the other, but I did, and this is my story.
