Why I choose to go to a private University
Katie Merrill

At the end of senior year, students across the nation are asked to make many tough decisions. If the should go to college? What field is best for them? What college to go to? A choice many college age kids don’t look at is a private universities. This could be for a variety of different reasons, maybe not as much exposure, high tuition prices, or fear of not going to a major university.

For me however, a private university close to home seemed to be the the perfect fit and quickly became a decision I will never regret. So for kids second guessing a private university, here are a few reasons why you should say yes.

  1. More scholarship opportunities

A major fear of private universities is the high tuition prices, but what many students may not know, is that private universities understand their high prices and are more likely to hand out large sums of scholarships. For students who play sports or are involved in music, you may find more money to help you pay your way through.

2. No fear of huge tuition increases

Since private universities aren’t funded by the states, they use outside sources in order to fund their educational programs. With today’s crazy political world, the future can be uncertain both economically and educationally. In many states, students are seeing major increases in their education prices. However, a private university may have lower increase since outside political factors don’t have as much as an effect.

4. No out of state tuition

For many students who seek to get their lives started in other places or other states, private universities may be a better option for them because they don't charge of state tuition. Out of state tuition can be a killer for students, sometimes it can even go over 10,000. This is because out of state students haven't had to pay tax to the state to fund educational systems. However, since a private university is not run by the state, many of them do not see a point in charging students extra.

3. Smaller Classes

Small campuses have a lot of unique benefits that not everyone understands. Smaller class sizes help professors get more one on one with students. This can help increase the rate of which students learn, and the harder the subject, the more time students can have with teachers in order to help them out.

The small campus size also help students get more of a family feel. With not as many students, it's easier for students to know everyone else on campus and helps give it more a familiar look.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
