In high school, I used to scoff at the idea of being part of a sorority. My friends and I would make fun of those who “paid for their friends” (which is not actually true!) and stood in the same pose for every picture (…possibly true). When I came to college, however, I did a 180. Everything I had once thought was completely and utterly wrong.
Before I joined Greek life or actually knew what it was, I had no idea that it would impact me in such an incredible way. I have felt more at home than ever by being part of a sorority. I have the most amazing support system I could have ever asked for, and, yes, I have met my future bridesmaids. My sisters are there for me through anything, and that was obvious from the minute I walked into the room during formal rush. I knew that the sisterhood and strength that they all had for each other were nothing short of breathtaking, and I am so proud to be a part of that.
Everyone in each chapter is unique. There is always someone new to talk to or something new to learn. Because of the diverse personalities and interests, it helps you become more open-minded. Encountering different people every time I go to an event or sit at chapter meetings makes the Greek experience even better. It’s not just about being another cookie cutter girl, but about being unique even when you’re surrounded by mundanity.
Greek life isn’t about wearing certain clothes or talking to certain girls, going to certain parties or pairing with certain frats. It’s all about the love. No one is perfect, and your sisters will understand that. They won’t make you feel bad for being yourself or for doing something out of your comfort zone. They will encourage you to be the best version of yourself and stand by you in every step you take in this crazy life.
Bonding is of the utmost importance, only trumping philanthropy by a few points. Philanthropy work helps you grow as a person with those around you who are passionate about the same things you are. Whether it’s supporting your chapter’s cause or helping out another sister, it is all priceless.

The reality is: Greek life isn’t something superficial; you are bonding with a group of people with whom you feel comfortable and loved. While being completely supported in everything you do, you also complete service work, fundraise for your chapter’s philanthropy and make incredible memories. At some schools, Greek life is segregated, but at my school, it's inclusive, inviting, and warm. We are encouraged to work with girls from other chapters and make friends across chapter lines. No one is left out or left behind in the Greek community.
At the end of the day, what you put into your chapter is what you get back. If you put in all of your love and effort then you will be rewarded. But if you just show up for the free food at a sister night or for it to look good on your resume, then maybe Greek life isn’t really for you.
So if you’re looking for unforgettable memories, best friends, helping others, and a place to grow and flourish, then go Greek. You won’t regret it. As for me, I do it for the love.
