Why I Can Never Support Trump

A really personal and open explanation of why Trump threatens my world.

Why I Can Never Support Trump
Never Trump

As I go to write this article, there's a pit in my stomach. I want to throw up and my hands are shaking. The topics I want to tackle are, quite frankly, rough. I know this is a rhetoric you have heard before. There are articles upon articles about why people don't support Trump. There are articles written by sexual assault survivors, by the LGBT+ community, by women, and by people of color. If the message hasn't gotten through to you yet, I don't expect only a few days before the election to change your mind.

To my family and friends supporting Trump, I am simply asking for you to understand. If you stumbled across this article by chance, I hope you have the empathy to understand. To those who are in the same position as me, I hope you know you're not alone.

There are facts about me in this article some may not know. I don't talk to everyone about every experience I have in life. My family does not know most of this. As I write this article, I am not sure that I will be sharing this on Facebook. I may only post it on Twitter and send it to those who know these truths about me. I'm not sure yet. But these are the raw and honest reasons why I cannot support Trump.

This is not a "Pro-Hillary" article. I don't need to tell you who I'm voting for on Tuesday, that is my private right. I will only tell you this: I cannot and will not support Donald Trump. And here is why:

I am a Christian. I do not know what God wants for my country, but I know that Trump is not the Christian choice. My Christian ethics and Biblical knowledge tell me that Trump is not who is right for our country. For starters, Trump does not embody the Christian spirit in his actions. The Bible says “as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience” (Colossians 3:12). Trump shows no compassion to marginalized groups and a poll from about a year ago shows most Republicans believing that Trump is a man who lacks compassion. Trump uses fear as a motivator, but we know in our God there is no fear, only love. Why would I, as a Christian who knows His perfect love, allow myself to give into the fear that Trump is trying to spread in our country? Beyond that, Trump's self-importance shows me that he is a man who thinks himself greater than God and than others. The Bible states “blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God” (Matthew 5: 5-8).

I am a victim of sexual assault and Trump is spreading rape culture across America. This reason is the reason I can barely stand to be around people who support Trump. They are saying that they would allow a man who has sexually assaulted women be the face of our country. They are saying that a man who believes that you can grab a women by her pussy should be the face of our country. Unfortunately, you cannot separate personal actions and convictions from politics. What a person does and believes will motivate their politics in some way. It makes me sick to think about the women who he has threatened to sue simply because they wanted to stand up and speak out about their rape. I never spoke out about my rape for similar fears that no one would believe me. That I would be slandered. And I tried my hardest to pretend that I wasn't being abused until I had to face it head on. I cannot allow a man who thinks that it's funny and okay to violate someone else lead my country, because if he believes that than he clearly has highly skewed morals.

Simply because I am a women. If I were to put my history and trauma behind me, this would still be a driving force in why I cannot bring myself to support Trump. As a women, I cannot support a man who thinks it's okay for me to be violated. It's already hard enough for rape victims and abuse victims to be heard and believed. Who knows what will happen to women if he is in office? His campaign is built on disrespecting my rights as a women. His comments about Hillary in debates show how blatantly he disrespects us. "Nasty woman," he says about her, without even being provoked. "Miss Piggy," he says about a former Miss Universe, trying to destroy a beautiful winner's self-esteem (and that's on top of his racist comments about her, as well). I cannot respect a man who has been shown time and time again to not respect me. Trump is the one who is nasty, and not in a good way.

I am a member of the LGBT+ community and so are many of my friends. No, I will not be going into my sexuality or how it fits in in my Christian beliefs. What matters here is that Trump has shown time-and-time again that he would create an environment in our country that is hostile to people in this community. I don't care what you believe, personally, about same sex marriages and the trans community and so on. We are people who live and love and just want to be safe. Trump and Pence's platform threatens our very ability to walk down the street. I personally like this article from January that tackles just Trump's beliefs on the LGBT community and this one from July that shows Pence's top anti-LGBT moments. We can't forget when Trump pledged to sign an anti-LGBT+ act just two months ago. When researching this, it honestly amazed me to find an article that praised Trump for raising the LGBT+ flag just a few days ago. To me, his words and politics speak more than this publicity stunt. Trump and Pence's politics are bluntly anti-LGBT and holding up one flag won't change that.

I care about minorities. This ties right back into my first point of Christianity and to the fact that I, myself, am part of marginalized groups (women and the LGBT community). First, my God himself is loving to all people. We are His children and His beloved. Throughout the Bible, we see Jesus reaching out to the undesirables and the unwanted. Many of my favorite Bible stories center around this, especially the story of the woman at the well. If you don't know it, Jesus speaks to a Samaritan woman who was shunned by her community for her many husbands. Jews despised Samaritans, but despite that, Jesus spoke to her and ministered to her. He does this with lepers and undesirables. Trump looks at marginalized groups with disgust. From mocking a disabled reporter to spreading anti-Muslim views to his racist and xenophobic comments.... Trump just clearly doesn't care about minorities. How can I morally support a man who takes minorities and marginalizes them further? I just cannot.

So, there you have it. A simple enough article. I have spelled out reasons that Trump reviles me. I feel unsafe with Trump being so revered. I feel unsafe knowing my loved ones support Trump. This article could have gone on forever, if I were to list all of the reasons I cannot support him. These are the core reasons, the reasons that made this so hard to write. Every time I hear someone supporting Trump, I hear them supporting ideals that take everything I am and smash it into the ground. How can I ever think of supporting a man like that, who makes me feel frightened for myself and my country?

I never will.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
