On January 21, 2017, the world experienced a rift when thousands of women filled the street the day after President Trump's inauguration for the women's march in Washington, DC. While this was the largest march of the day, dozens of sister marches happened in countless cities across the world, including here in Asheville, NC.
On countless social media platforms I have seen people asking, "What are these women even marching for anyways?" and "Women already have rights so what could they possibly be marching for?"
Well, one of the reasons we march is for our bodies; and when I say OUR bodies, I mean they belong to us and us alone. Not to Congress and certainly not to President Donald Trump. Trump is a pro-life supporter that wants to ban abortions in under developed countries. This will sadly not get rid of abortions, it will get rid of safe abortions. A man will never know the physical and emotional trauma that a women can experience with an unwanted pregnancy.
Another reason we march is the fact that our new president has made the comments of a sexist pig. He is quoted throughout the country with the line, "grab her by the pussy." Needless to say, the pussy is starting to grab back. Many voices were heard at the march and spoke about the inequality we still face today especially with the fact that the wage gap is still widely prevalent and even worse for women of color. Madonna, Scarlett Johansson and Maryum Ali (Muhammad Ali's daughter) were just three of the prominent speakers at Washington's march.
Lastly, we march for our children and our grandchildren—the future generation. We want to show them that they don't have to live in a world where women are unequal and to raise them to use their voices and stand up if they don't agree with something. We want to reach boys to stand up for women, respect them and to be rebels who don't idly let the world pass them by. After all, as Eleanor Roosevelt once said, "Well-behaved women rarely make history."
