A new celebrity is taking over the world of comedy with her self deprecating humor, covering magazines like Entertainment Weekly and making audiences laugh on numerous talk shows such as "Ellen" and "Conan." Her name? Amy Schumer.
Amy Schumer is using her brilliant hilarity and fearlessly rising to fame with the use of her candid humor and quick wit. This woman is opening up doors for not only women in comedy, but for women everywhere. Because of her admirable laissez-faire attitude and candor, Schumer has piqued everyone's interest and is quickly becoming adored by many.
I’ve had many women play role model to me in my adolescent life. Taylor Swift is one because she helped me progress through my teenage angst. Beyoncé is a role model merely because she is a perfect human, as are Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Lawrence. But it never occurred to me that a woman like Amy Schumer would be on the list. It’s because Schumer is able to expose her flaws and be proud of the woman she is, which is a quality I have grown to admire and respect. She’s also hilarious. Not sold yet? Here are a few reasons why Amy Schumer is my current role model.
1. Schumer appeals to the voice of all females and males of the Millennial generation.
She sheds light on the current state of the non-existent dating world in her upcoming film "Trainwreck." In the film, Schumer depicts a commitment-phobic female whose role delves into poking fun and capturing the hilarity of a culture who once knew how to date and is now known as the hookup culture. Schumer not only has the crass and sexual humor to appeal to men, but she is not afraid to point out her insecurities, showing woman that there is no need to constantly attempt to attain perfection.
2. Everything about this speech of her accepting the Trailblazer award at the Glamour UK Women of the Year:

3. Schumer thoroughly empowers women.
Amy’s main message to women is to not be afraid of expressing their sexuality, and she promotes her message by pointing out and emphasizing the inequalities and injustices women still face today. Schumer is another face promoting the fact that feminism does not mean hating men; it means uniting women and promoting equality among sexes. Schumer is all about female empowerment, a campaign that needs more faces behind it.
4. Amy Schumer is a testament to the fact that women CAN be funny.
For some reason, male comedians seem to think it’s acceptable to say that women cannot be funny, a stigma that has been proven wrong by the likes of Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and numerous other women in comedy. Schumer completely squashes that reputation as well without having rehearsed a skit.
5. Schumer doesn’t care about the haters.
Speaking one's mind in the public eye can create tumultuous controversy. We’ve seen it with nearly every celebrity on the spectrum, and Schumer is no stranger to the backlash. Amy has been known to speak her mind on very prevalent issues occurring in society, such as sexism and racism, which is just another thing I admire about her. In an article in The Guardian, Schumer was said to have displayed a “shockingly large blind spot to race” during her stint hosting the MTV music awards. The article later went on to bash her performance hosting the award show, demonstrating how she delved into racial territory. Schumer responded appropriately and admirably with a post on Twitter that reads as follows:
“I go in and out of playing the irreverent idiot. That includes making dumb jokes involving race. I enjoy playing the girl who time to time says the dumbest thing possible, and playing with race is a thing we are not supposed to do, which is what makes it so fun for comics.”
Schumer was able to explain herself gracefully as well as stand up for comedians' actions. Without comedians poking fun at major issues we have in our society, we would never be able to progress.
But on a lighter note, Schumer has the capability to continue to impress and pique the interest of many as well as fight for what she believes in, all while being her stylish and quirky self.
