There have been many years throughout time that have been considered horrible years, time times during the Great Depression, the wars, etc. 2016 has been one of those years. It didn’t have any wars, but there were major incidents that makes everyone want to say “Go away 2016!”
2016 is definitely that year where historians and teachers will not teach it or talk about it.
Here are some reasons why 2016 just needs to go away:
THE ELECTION
This election will go down in history as one of the most talked about and fought over. With Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump running, we were screwed either way, but the outcome makes many people fear for the future. We all stressed over it. Families have been torn apart because they have fought over it. It was definitely one that will be remembered.
HARAMBE
On May 28th, a 3 year old boy climbed into the gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo and was dragged by a 17 year old gorilla, Harambe. For the safety of the young boy, a worker shot and killed Harambe. Many people were outraged, and it sparked many talks on the internet.
ORLANDO NIGHTCLUB MASSACRE
On June 12, a 29 year old killed 50 people and injured 50 more. This was considered a terrorist attack, and a hate crime against the LGBTQ+ community. This hate crime came weeks after the Supreme Court declared that gay marriage would be legal in all 50 states.
Many other violent attacks and shootings occurred this year also. We remember all those we lost.
AMERICAN IDOL
After 15 seasons, the popular singing talent competition show came to an end. This talent competition. Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, sparked many big names in Hollywood (Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, Adam Lambert, Daughtry, Jordin Sparks, Phillip Phillips, Kellie Pickler, etc.).
NO NEW TAYLOR SWIFT ALBUM
Although we did get some singles, “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” (Swift and Zayn, Fifty Shades Darker), and Taylor wrote and produced two songs, Little Big Town’s, “Better Man”, and “This is What You Came For” (Calvin Harris and Rihanna), we didn’t get a full new album from Swift. Any Swift fan knows that Taylor releases her albums every other year in the fall. Her last album, 1989, was released in October 2014. Swift said she was taking a break, but fans held out hope. Maybe next year….
WE LOST A LOT OF LEGENDS
2016 took away more than 130 celebrities from us. We lost iconic singers, actors, athletes, directors, journalists, and many more. If you would like to pay one last tribute to all of those we lost, click here: http://wycd.cbslocal.com/2016/12/21/130-celebritie... (We also remember Debbie Reynolds and Christina Grimmie).
David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Prince, Carrie Fisher, Gene Wilder, and George Michael are just a FEW of the icons that we lost this year. We thank them for making huge impacts in our lives.
Rest in Peace angels. You will be deeply missed…
CLOWN SCARE
Remember when we were afraid to go out of our houses because killer clowns were on the loose? They threatened schools, terrorized neighborhoods, and caused a lot of people anxiety.
ZIKA VIRUS
This virus, caused by mosquitos, popped up in the U.S. this year. Some people died from it, and others got really sick. Pregnant women were advised to be cautious because it could affect their baby to have birth defects.
ABC FAMILY NAME CHANGE
Although this was a minor thing, many children, teens, and young adults were upset that the name was being changed. Now known as Freeform, this channel changed its name to draw in more young viewers (even though the older viewers would be lost due to the changes).
“FAMOUS” LYRICS CONTROVERSY
Have you heard the song “Famous” by KAnye West? If not, you’ve probably at least heard about it. There is a line in there about Taylor Swift, that Kanye claims he got permission from Swift to write. However, Swift did not give him permission, and their whole fight sparked a Twitter controversy.
BROCK TURNER
Brock Turner, a rich, student college athlete, only got 3 MONTHS in jail after sexually assaulting an unconscious woman at a party they both attended.
GOODBYE VINE
Vine, 6 second video loops that entertained many people, is being shut down. Users will be able to keep their vines and view old ones, just no ones can be made.
AND SO MUCH MORE....
There were some good things to come out of this year: The Olympics, which always brings people closer together, Leo FINALLY won an Oscar, two live SUCCESSFUL TV musicals (featuring both Hough siblings). We got two new Harry Potter stories: Fantastic Beasts and Cursed Child, and Justin Timberlake released his 20/20 Experience Concert Tour on Netflix, which sparked the trending hashtag, #TimberlakeAndChill.
2016 was bad, and had a few good things come out of it, but we all survived. I wish you all a happy, healthy, and peaceful 2017!
