The Rio 2016 Summer Olympics are right around the corner and there are many things to look forward to. Golf is coming back, some athletes are coming back, some are appearing for the first time. Politics aside, the whole world is about to come together to witness history in sports being made. Here are some of the people you should keep your eyes on.
1. Simone Biles
A warm welcome should be extended to the newbie to the Olympic stage. Simone Biles, only 19 years old, will be competing in gymnastics individually and on team USA. She was born in Columbus Ohio and was adopted by her grandparents along with her sister and two brothers. Her sister is also a gymnast. Simone is the most decorated female gymnast outside the Olympics and is sure to show up ready to prove to the returning gymnasts that she can bring it.
2. Usain Bolt
It is rumored (and most likely is true) that Usain will bolt for the last time in Rio. The athlete will celebrate his 30th birthday with one of the biggest celebrations in the world, the closing of the Summer Olympics. Representing Jamaica for the third time at these cherished games, "Lightning Bolt" is hoping, as are many adoring fans, to go out with a bang and to bring honor to his country at least one more time, adding on to his prior gold medals. Even though he isn't running for America, you're not going to want to miss him running. Jamaica has only won 8 gold medals and 6 of those are due to the man who is rumored to be faster than a cheetah. (But we will save that theory for Mythbusters).
3. Stephen Curry
Curry will make his Olympic debut come the Rio Olympics. This past basketball season, all eyes were on him he played for the Golden State Warriors and earned the title NBA Most Valuable Player Award. He's an up and coming player for sure and is going to help team USA shoot their way to victory!
4. Gabby Douglas
"All I need to do is trust myself" has become the mantra for the now 20 year old gymnast ready to take the stage and win over the hearts of America and beyond in a few short weeks. Gabby Douglas was only 16 when she not only competed in the 2012 London Olympics but dominated, flipping away with two gold medals, one for the team event, "The Fierce Five" and one individually. Douglas, nicknamed "Flying Squirrel", can do it all. From backflips off the balance beam to nailing a landing off the bars to charming the audience with her floor routine, complete with her classic, heartwarming smile.
5. Missy Franklin
This beauty is a beast! She started swimming in the Olympic Trials at the age of 13 and she placed 37th out of 100. Then at the age of 17, she won four gold medals and one bronze in London in 2012. Now the 21-year-old is ready to jump back in the water and do it all again. She has been training even harder than ever so that she can keep her title and gain some others.
6. Ibtihaj Muhammad
This 30 year old fencer is planning on making history in this sequence of events in the Summer Olympics, but not in the usual way. Ibtihaj is hoping to go for the gold. Every step of the way, even when she is fencing, she is going to be wearing her hijab, hoping to shed some light on some of the Islamophobia present in America and in other countries. This is the first time a Muslim woman has worn a hijab when playing in the games. She stared fencing because she wanted to play a sport that she would be allowed to represent herself in and fencing was the only one that made sense to her. There is more than one way to make history and we already know one way that she will! Good luck Ibtihaj!
7. Michael Phelps
Even though the 30-year-old swimmer from a small town in Maryland has won 18 gold medals (six in Athens 2004, eight in Beijing 2008, four in London) and two silver medals (London 2012) and two bronze (Athens 2004) he still is hungry for more. Phelps has broken countless records, whether it be Olympic, national, or personal best. Many people believe that he has fallen from glory because of controversies he has brought upon himself including but not limited to a DUI at the age of 19 after the 2004 Olympics and the use of illegal drugs causing the loss of sponsorship and the credibility he worked hard to create, but he is definitely an athlete that comes ready to compete and take the world by storm. Literally. He has more gold medals than some whole countries do.
8. The Williams Sisters
Often times, Venus and Serena are on opposing sides of the net in friendly battles. Sometimes for charity, others for competitions. This year, they will be serving up something special. They will be playing for team USA as a double., for the first time since the US open in 2014. Two of the biggest names in tennis, past present and future, will be tag teaming team USA all the way to gold, an event their parents probably are looking forward to now more than ever. After all, when one daughter plays another, which do they root for?
9. Serena Williams
Serena will also be defending her silver medal title in singles with her sister and the rest of her supportive family rooting her all the way to the top.
10. USA Woman's Soccer Team
They brought pride to our country during the FIFA World Cup and they are ready to do it again! After knocking all the other teams out of the competition, they were the last ones standing. No team has ever won the World Cup and Olympic Gold before. Could Team USA be the first?
11. Zika
Last but not least, zika may make an appearance. Some athletes have pulled out of the competition in fear of being bitten. But that's another story for another day.
