An Extensive--Yet Incomplete--List of Things That Do Not Define Who You Are as a Human Being

As the title suggests:

1. Numbers: your age, your weight, your height.

2. Your standardized test scores.

3. Heck, even your normal test scores. Your grades. Your GPA. The number of colleges into which you did or did not get accepted.

4. The number of hours you spend at the gym.

5. The number of days you go to church.

6. Your religious beliefs.

7. Your political beliefs.

8. How hard you work 24/7. You will always have good days and bad days. You can't give every single workout your 100%--and that's okay.

9. Other people's expectations and standards for you.

10. Your own expectations and standards--for yourself. You are not defined by the ability or inability to meet these high standards you set for yourself. You have never seen yourself, truly. You have only seen your reflection in mirrors, your image through a camera. You have never seen you, as you. How can you give yourself so many standards and judge your own worth based on these, if you have never seen yourself in the light?

11. The interminable list of mistakes you've made in the past.

12. How forgetful you are.

13. How many friends you have.

14. How many times a week you go out to parties.

15. How much you look forward to Friday, just to be done with the week.

16. Your mental state. Your mental health state.

17. The situation your family is in.

18. How much you've succeeded.

19. How much you've failed.

20. How many bridges you've burned, relationship-wise.

21. How other people judge you.

22. Your clothes. The amount of effort you put into your appearance every morning.

23. How many "gold medals" you have won.

24. Your own demons.

25. How often you curse.

26. How often you sin.

27. How often you pray.

28. How often you confess.

29. Whether or not you even believe in a higher power.

30. Your body.

31. Your body art. Piercings, tattoos, or lack thereof.

32. Your intelligence. Your IQ.

33. Your ability to do math. Your ability to read. Your ability to draw.

34. Physical strength.

35. How fast you run, how much you can bench.

36. How much you like junk food.

36. How much little kids like you.

37. How much animals like you.

38. Your sexual orientation and gender.

39. If you want to get married.

40. If you want to have kids.

41. How many kids you want.

42. Your opinions on abortion, gun control, immigration, etc.

43. How good of a driver you are.

44. How good of a parallel-parker you are.

45. How much money you make.

46. What you do for a living.

47. Whether or not you even have a job.

48. How good you are at calming people down when they're crying.

49. How adventurous you feel at the moment.

50. How much you stress yourself out needlessly.

51. How much you can ramble on, and on, and on.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
