As Election Day is rapidly approaching, I have found myself not only noticing more political posts, but taking them closer to heart. I suppose this comes from the fact that watching people post about Donald Trump always felt like news coming from an alternate universe. It never felt real. It didn’t feel real when he won the primary, and even right about up until now, his campaign didn’t feel real. As I see more and more of my conservative friends and family say that they’re voting for Trump, it’s starting to settle in. This is real, and it is showing the true colors of a lot of people that I have respected for so long.
I have seen people comment on Hillary’s politics saying that they do not want their children growing up in a world with Hillary as president. Fair. So they’re voting for Donald Trump.
Wait — what?
Donald Trump, who has bragged about sexually assaulting women, has called Mexicans rapists, mocks disabled people, has sexually assaulted women, is on trial for raping a 13 year old, bragged about paying no taxes for his country that many of his supporters claim to devote their lives to, scammed people with Trump University, lost around one billion dollars due to his failed business schemes, and more?
I want to be clear, I am not happy with having Hillary as the choice for the Democrats either. I do not find her to be nearly progressive enough for my taste, or progressive enough to push the country in the direction I want it to go. I do not wish to downplay her scandals, such as the “super predator” and the email server. I find her to consistently strive for power for the sake of power. But then I have to ask myself, isn’t that what every politician strives for?
And then there’s Trump, who openly brags about grabbing women by the p***y. Whose ex-wife, under oath, described how Trump violently raped her. Who has allegedly threatened multiple women into staying quiet about him sexually assaulting them. Who takes advantage of the weak. Who exhibits blatant xenophobia, racism, sexism, and ableism. I do not think that Trump is in the race for power, just like nearly every other politician in the world. I think he’s in the race because he wants to demonstrate how amazing he is. How wonderful he is. How huge he is. And, of course, when you’re famous, women let you do anything! Right, Donald? How much more famous can you get than the President of the United States of America?
So, America, who is worse?
