If you are a college student this question is probably asked of you daily. Whether its by your parents, relatives, professors or even friends. I am nineteen years old and find it impossible to know what I want to do for the rest of my life. Those four words alone “the ret of my life” are so intimidating and make me think that I will be stuck in one career forever. If your like me, you stress about this idea constantly. You ask yourself, what do I want? And where am I going? I’m here to tell you that these thoughts and emotions are totally normal. It is impossible to know exactly where you will end up. If you asked me three years ago where I was going to college I would have no idea. I think its very hard to actually plan out your whole life because sometimes things just happen. I am a firm believer in the saying everything happens for a reason. I think that each move we all make, leads us to the next chapter in our lives.
With that being said I think it is important to go to college and figure out what your passions are. I think that it is a good place to learn about who you are and who you are not. However, I think it is unrealistic to think that each one of us has an elaborate plan about what we are going to do after graduation. If you do have an elaborate plan, good for you because I think you are among the minority.
It has always been a dream of mine to follow my heart and to do something that makes me happy. I feel like this notion should be true for everyone. I think everyone has a special talent or interest that they bring into the world. With that being said I think it is also important to remember that whatever you chose to go into will be work. This work will sometimes annoy you even if it is your greatest passion. I think some people confuse doing what your passionate about and doing something fun. I think work itself can definitely have fun moments but is not going to be a walk in the park everyday.
If you don’t know what you want to do with your life, don’t worry you are not alone and you will find out what your passion is. If people bother you with the question of “what do you want to do for the rest of your life” it is just them looking out for you and wanting you to have some direction. With that being said I think it is okay to not have complete direction when it comes to a future career. We will all probably change our careers so many times from what we say we are going to d o straight out of college. I think the important thing to remember is to be open to new and exciting experiences that will help you discover your true passion.
