My heart is breaking over the state of our country. It was strange to me when I saw the country's problems in my own family tonight. Let me be clear: I love my family to death! I think they are the absolute best, and I wouldn't trade them for anything! However, like every family, we have our struggles and bad days.
My sister got home today from Puerto Rico. In her week-long absence, she gave my family and some friends a few tasks to get done — she is planning her wedding and needed help. Well, none of those errands got finished. My sister was frustrated and felt as if no one cared, and she deserved to feel that way. My family and I made excuses of course. Who wouldn't? No one wants to be wrong or feel guilty. As we began to feel worse and worse about our own failure, our anger toward my sister grew. Our excuses changed from, "I forgot," to, "Well, I'm exhausted because I had a busy week. I had my own chores to do, but you don't seem to care about that." We started shifting the blame more and more towards her. In the midst of the pointing fingers, no one stopped to say, "You know what? You're right. You needed help, and I didn't follow through. I'm sorry." Those words would have prevented a lot of tears and anger.
This is a tiny example compared to what is going on in the world right now; but even with this silly scenario that was blown out of proportion, we were all ready to explode on one another. Entire groups of people have so much hate and blame built up against other groups that we are killing each other over it!
Everyone wants to be right, and no one likes to apologize. We have a pride issue.
Everyone is desperately looking for a scapegoat. Someone to cast the blame on. We blame the government, our families, our friends, our school system, our past, God and whatever else possible. No one wants to admit that they may actually be part of the problem. At some point, people are going to have to step up and say, "I messed up. It was my fault, and I'm sorry." We have to take ownership and responsibility for our own actions. It would solve more problems than we may realize.
I know this article isn't going to change anything. It was a brief glimpse into all of my thoughts on this topic. I don't know how to word all the things I would love to say. Even if I did know how to say everything, I shared pages of my opinion, and thousands of people read it - it still wouldn't make a difference. We are still humans in a fallen world. I can't change this country. Nothing can except for The King of Kings and Lord of Lords. We don't need a good president; we need the One, True God. He is the only One who can change the hearts of man and change the atmosphere of this country. We have turned from Him, but we desperately need His healing hand to mend The Land of The Free. Christians, it's time to be on our knees in fervent prayer.
