It came out on November 23 and you've all heard about it. Directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, and pulling in over $81 million in its debut, Disney has gone out and produced a beautiful and majorly successful animated film once again. Starring Dwayne Johnson and introducing Auli'i Cravalho as the young, female protagonist, "Moana" is a film that does not disappoint.
Marketed as a story about a strong-willed Polynesian girl who meets the self-absorbed demigod Maui, "Moana" follows an island chief's daughter, Moana, as she travels the sea to save her island from the lava demon Te Kā. As ancient tales would have it, Maui, demigod of the wind and sea, stole the heart of the goddess Te Fiti long ago only to be attacked by the lava demon Te Kā, causing him to lose the heart in the sea. The tale continued with the proclamation that one day, the ocean would choose someone to find the heart and Maui, and return the heart to the goddess. Moana is the chosen one, and the ocean sends her with the heart to find Maui. Moana is pressed for time as her island begins to die; she has to restore the heart and defeat the demon.
In true Disney fashion, Moana is faced with many challenges, including the attitude and mindset of Maui, the demigod who is supposed to be her saving grace. Moana rises to the challenge and overcomes her own demons as well as the ones around her, proving that courage and strength reside within everyone, even in the most dire of situations.
Not only is the storyline, animation, and voice acting phenomenal, the music that goes along with the film is flawless. Though it was not marketed as such, "Moana" is a Disney musical that features a handful of creatively beautiful songs and score. The songs were written by an incredibly accomplished group: Opetaia Foa'i, Mark Mancina, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Opetaia Foa'i is the founder of Te Vaka, the highly acclaimed and successful Oceanic music group that performs contemporary Pacific music. Mark Mancina is a renown American composer who has worked on many films including "The Lion King" and "Tarzan." Lin-Manuel Miranda is a name that has been in the spotlight with his tremendous recent success with the Broadway musical "Hamilton" in which he created and starred in. With the genius of these three men, it is no wonder that the music in Moana is so incredible.
"Moana" is a film that not only stars the second Pacific Islander "princess" in Disney's studio ("Lilo and Stitch" being the first) but it also stars a young girl who doesn't want the typical princess life. Moana is set to take over the village after her father, but she wants to travel the sea. Throwing classic stereotypes to the wind, Moana wants the rough, chaotic life that exists on the sea rather than the peaceful way of life that remains for her on her island. Moana is strong, driven, compassionate, clever, determined, and everything that young kids should have in a role model.
Moana shows just how far she'll go to save her family. Along the way she makes friends, outwits enemies, shows compassion in the face of adversity and realizes that not everything can be taken at face value. "Moana" is a family movie with many life-lessons that are presented in a simple, yet impactful manner. If you haven't seen "Moana" yet, drive to the nearest movie theater today. All I will say is "You're Welcome."
