When Your Big Is Your Best Friend

"If I murdered a person, she's the one I would call to help me drag the corpse across the living room floor. She's my person"- 'Grey's Anatomy'

When Your Big Is Your Best Friend

I always wanted my big and I to be close. The process of waiting to find out who my big was going to be was brutal. It felt like I was never going to find out who she was. I received baskets with goodies and notes giving me (false) hints of what she looked like and how she was so excited to get to know me; little did I know she already knew me pretty well.

The girl, who is my big, is now my best friend. She isn’t just someone who was a mentor up until initiation, she isn’t just someone who speaks to me a couple times a week, and she is the person I go to with anything and everything. When your big is your best friend, she is a lot of things.

  • She is the person you go to for a shoulder to cry on: When you walk into her house with puffy eyes and a runny nose, the first question she asks is, “Who do I have to kill?” After she’s calmed down a little, she always seems to know exactly what to say, and her hugs are always the best. She’s the kind of person that automatically makes you feel better just by wiping away tears and telling you, “Stop letting things dull your sparkle.”
  • She is the person you go to when you need a good laugh: I have never met someone who is so beautiful and smart, yet sometimes says things that make me contemplate my entire life. So ditzy sometimes, but you wouldn’t trade it for anything. She doesn’t even have to try to be funny, because everything that comes out of her mouth just makes you giggle.
  • She is the person who is your best (and worst) influence: This one is a given. She’s the one that pushes that last tequila shot that you both know you don’t need. She’s the one who tells you calories don’t count if no one knows, so you leave the social and get a piece of pizza, just to return like nothing happened. She’s the one who makes you see how awesome you are when you don’t feel that way. She’s the one that pushes you to keep going when you just want to give up. (Thanks for that, by the way.)
  • She is the person who loves you no matter what: Your big is always on your side. Your big is always the one to stand by you even if you are wrong. She supports you like no one else and would do anything to protect you. Even when you fight, it doesn't last long, because you have unconditional love for each other that will never go away.
  • She is YOUR person: We know each other like the backs of our hands. Sometimes, we even finish each other's sentences. She knows that chicken wings literally bring tears to my eyes, and I know sour candy is her sh**. She knows exactly what will make me happy on a bad day, and the exact movie to put on to make me smile.

I’m really lucky to be a part of such an amazing family, with such an amazing big. She’s not just my sister; she’s my big, my person, and my actual soul mate. I couldn’t be any more lucky than I am to have her, and I’m so glad I get to spend these next two years at school with her. I only hope I can be half the big she was to me. Here’s to you, Biggie. I love you!

XOXO,

Little

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
