For years, you two have been talking about going to the same college. You guys were going to room together, and college was going to be perfect with your best friend by your side. Finally, senior year comes, and it is time to start applying to the same colleges. Both of your aspirations that you wanted to get out of college have changed from those years ago. My best friend wanted a school purely for academics and wanted to get as far away as possible away from our home state. However, I wanted to go to the big state school that four generations of my family attended, and I wanted to join a sorority and be a part of a sisterhood.
I decided to go to the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky., and she decided to go to Arcadia University in Philadelphia, Pa. We are about 13 hours away from each other. If your best friend is far away from you, these are some things you know to be true.
1. It is up to Thanksgiving break and Christmas break to see each other.
When August comes, it pains you that you can't see your best friend until November. The longest you all have spent apart is maybe a week, and to not see them for a couple of months? Truly unacceptable.
2. You start to think their new friends at school are replacing you.
Then, you quickly check on that and you know that isn't true for one second.
3. It's hard trying to explain everything that is going on because they aren't there.
They don't know how actually hard your classes are, or how truly annoying this one girl is; it's hard explaining everything to every detail.
4. When you see something that involves an inside joke, you have to laugh by yourself.
I can't listen to "N***** in Paris" by Kanye West with any other person.
5. Their parents want to take you out to lunch when you are home, because she isn't.
Just because their actual child isn't home, doesn't mean they can't treat you like their own.
6. When you talk about them to your friends at school, they seem to know everything that happens in their lives too.
One time, my roommate asked how my best friend did on her huge 24-hour exam she had to take; they have never met before in their lives.
7. When you all finally get to see each other, you act like it's been years, then you two go back to normal.
When I see her at the airport, I start to cry. Then, I just act like I just saw her yesterday and we go back to being normal.
I am very excited to have my best friend home for the holidays, and it will crush me again when she leaves my side.
