Whether it's only a couple hours away or a plane ride's distance, across the country or across the sea, someone who you've known for years or someone you've only known for a few months, we all have friends who live in far off places.
Far off places: it has a fairy tale-esque ring to it. It sounds kind of magical, right? A different place, foreign, somewhere undiscovered and unknown to you, somewhere (anywhere) other than here, wherever that may be.
I can't help but think of those friends often. I wonder what they've been up to, if they're still obsessed with that one TV show, if they're still talking to that guy they met out one night. I wonder what they're doing, where they're going, and mostly I wonder if they ever think of me.
The college years are so transitory. We meet people, spend a significant amount of time with them briefly, and then both parties are moving on in different directions. People attend different universities, graduate, get jobs, or sometimes just need a change. And suddenly it feels like all the friendships that grew so quickly are suddenly pulled apart and scattered.
I'd like to think this doesn't affect the friendships themselves. While you may not be as close and talking as often becomes difficult with everyone's different schedules, that doesn't mean the friendship is any less or has disappeared altogether. That doesn't instantly wipe away all the memories, inside jokes, or thoughts you had with that person.
I feel lucky to know so many people from so many different places. You'll always have someone to catch up with over coffee, reminisce on all the funny memories, and create some more. And hey, if you want to visit a place they happen to live in, you have free room and board for awhile.
So to all my friends in far off places, across the country or across the sea, I wish you well and I hope to see you again. Whether it's for another Chipotle run with some Beyonce chair dancing afterward when we should be studying or too late of a night at The Book Club, thanks for the memories and let's catch up sometime soon, OK?
