Sometimes, you may feel like time is moving too fast and you can't catch up. You can't breathe. You can't think. You feel lost. You feel like you have no control over what is happening in your life. You have a million things you want to get done. Do you know these feelings? People have expectations of you and add things to your social calendar and to-do list. I'm not just talking about a simple to-do list. You have all these hopes and dreams and then suddenly it's time to make them happen. Life has a funny way of sneaking up on us like that.
It's important to know that you aren't alone in feeling this way. When you feel like you're losing control, or the world is catching up with you, there are a few things you can do.
First, you can prioritize happenings in your life. What is most important to you? What are your priorities? Is your career the most important thing in your life? Would you move anywhere? Evaluate what you really want out of life, long-term and short-term. If you don't know the answers to these questions, it's ok- just decide on doing something.
Next, you can goal-set. This sort of goes hand in hand with prioritizing what you want out of life. Goal-setting can also help with the inevitable stress and overwhelming feeling of prioritizing. Make long-term and short-term goals for yourself and what you want to accomplish.
Third, you can do something productive every single day. Achieving something every day will help you feel a little more in control.
Fourth, give yourself some self-love. Do things that you enjoy every day just for the sake of enjoyment. Make your favorite dish or read your favorite book. Go get some fresh air. These things will help you enjoy life a little more to the fullest.
Fifth, don't be afraid to take risks. As much as we hear this, it's so important. Taking a risk could lead to the opportunity that could change your life. Afraid of applying for a job or afraid you won't get it? Do it anyway. Want to take a trip? Make it happen. Want to go out with someone? Ask them. Find ways to take control and not be afraid to make important decisions. Another important thing is to also let go of control over the things you have no control over. It is a waste of time and energy to stress, even though we all do it.
Lastly, lean on your family and friends around you. Express to them and process your concerns and desires. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, talk to someone else. It's not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength.
The important thing is that you know you're not alone. Life is not linear, and sometimes the plans we have for ourselves make God laugh. Your plans, hopes, and dreams may all change. That's ok. It will all work out and come together in the end, even if it's in ways that you never expected.
