"I've found almost everything ever written about love to be true. Shakespeare said "Journeys end in lovers meeting." What an extraordinary thought. Personally, I have not experienced anything remotely close to that, but I am more than willing to believe Shakespeare had. I suppose I think about love more than anyone really should. I am constantly amazed by its sheer power to alter and define our lives. It was Shakespeare who also said "love is blind". Now that is something I know to be true. For some quite inexplicably, love fades; for others love is simply lost. But then of course love can also be found, even if just for the night. And then, there's another kind of love: the cruelest kind. The one that almost kills its victims. It's called unrequited love. Of that I am an expert. Most love stories are about people who fall in love with each other. But what about the rest of us? What about our stories, those of us who fall in love alone? We are the victims of the one sided affair. We are the cursed of the loved ones. We are the unloved ones, the walking wounded. The handicapped without the advantage of a great parking space! Yes, you are looking at one such individual. And I have willingly loved that man for over three miserable years! The absolute worst years of my life! The worst Christmas', the worst Birthday's, New Years Eve's brought in by tears and valium. These years that I have been in love have been the darkest days of my life. All because I've been cursed by being in love with a man who does not and will not love me back. Oh god, just the sight of him! Heart pounding! Throat thickening! Absolutely can't swallow! All the usual symptoms. I understand feeling as small and as insignificant as humanly possible. And how it can actually ache in places you didn't know you had inside you. And it doesn't matter how many new haircuts you get, or gyms you join, or how many glasses of chardonnay you drink with your girlfriends... you still go to bed every night going over every detail and wonder what you did wrong or how you could have misunderstood. And how in the hell for that brief moment you could think that you were that happy. And sometimes you can even convince yourself that he'll see the light and show up at your door. "
This is the beginning to a movie that, to be perfectly honest, I've never watched. I became so fascinated by this quote that everything after it was tuned out. I wish I could take credit for such an amazing piece of writing, but sadly I cannot. A one sided love affair has always captivated audiences through literature, music, and art. There is just something so intoxicating about a romance that seems doomed that everyone tends to root for. Sad, beautiful, tragic. Even in current day, it doesn't take long to find examples of people who fall in love and continue to fall alone. "I'm falling to pieces 'cause when a heart breaks it don't break even."
There is a quote from One Tree Hill that says, "There are over six billion souls, and sometimes all you need is one. There are some people that you meet in life that, let's be honest, change you. They make you look at things from a different point of view and they make your heart feel things that you never thought was possible. These are some of the very best and very worst people in life. Because what happens if they leave? People are people and sometimes things just don't work out. Sometimes people don't love you the way that you honestly deserve. This is one of the sad hard truths of life. but through all this, in the words of Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl "people who need people are the luckiest people in the world." It is a difficult thing to live with, but the ability to be broken is ultimately what ends up being the best thing about humanity.
Things hurt at the moment. Heartbreak has the ability to rip people apart at the seems only to mend them in new ways that they never thought imaginable. Life happens and things change and people move on. That is one of the beautiful things about life. If today is the very worst day of your life, that means that tomorrow can only be better. In the wise words of John Green “When adults say, 'Teenagers think they are invincible,' with that sly, stupid smile on their faces, they don't know how right they are. We need never be hopeless, because we can never be irreparably broken. We think that we are invincible because we are. We cannot be born, and we cannot die. Like all energy, we can only change shapes and sizes and manifestations. They forget that when they get old. They get scared of losing and failing. But that part of us greater than the sum of our parts cannot begin and cannot end, and so it cannot fail.” Time may not be able to heal all wounds, but it sure can mend them into something better.
