What's The Deal With Adulting?

Adulting (v): Mimicking things you see real adults do in an attempt to trick people into believing you are a successful adult, as well. Basically trying to be an adult.

Whether currently in school, discovering/finding your wanderlust, or working the days away, I think all of us so-called adults in or entering our early 20s can agree that we have no idea how to be an adult, and frankly have very little clue what we’re even doing.

I personally like to say that “I’m currently adulting” a.k.a more like attempting to be an adult. This means that I get excited about grown-up things, but in all actuality have very little clue to what I’m doing and a majority of the time am just winging it. I was so eager to grow up and make decisions for myself, and now that I’m here, not only am I terrified of the life that’s in front of me, but I’ve realized how hard being an adult and in charge of my own self actually is.

Some think that being an adult isn't all that it's cracked up to be, and I had no idea. But as I begin to figure it out, it’s honestly pretty f*cking awesome! To be in charge of your own self and to look at the life that’s in front of you is actually really empowering and truthfully a very weird feeling. Yeah, I have no idea how to do taxes or iron a shirt, but there’s always going to be pros and cons to everything.

Adulting, in my opinion, is the in-between phase from being a teenager to becoming an actual adult. It's where we learn and attempt to master everything our parents are just so good at and have been trying to get us to do for years. I think each of us have so many questions and concerns regarding grown-up-like things. Below is a jumble of questions, more like actual concerns, because I really don't know the answers, I have about adulting and things grown-ups know how and have to do, coupled with some gifs I thought were funny and relatable....OK the gifs are because I wanted to further procrastinate my life and all the things I had to do. What can I say, I really have no idea how to actually adult.

1. How do I go about doing taxes? What the heck is a 401K and how do I get one? What even is a mortgage? How do I get a checkbook, and how do I go about filling out a check…?

2. How in the world do I go about saving and budgeting my money?

3. Is it normal to have mental breakdowns more than twice a week?

4. How do you figure out what you want to do with your life?

5. How do I not take things too personally and keep my composure when it feels like everything’s falling apart

6. How does one iron?

7. How does one eat a well balanced meal, not consisting solely of Ramen, coffee, and Pop Tarts?

8. How does one actually get their life together?

9. And how does one plan?

10. Will going and scheduling a doctor’s appointment by yourself ever not be terrifying?

11. How do you properly leave a voicemail message?

12. After a long enjoyable weekend, how do you look forward and actually like Mondays?

13. And finally, how do you master and become good enough at all these things so that you one day are an actual grown up and are able to fully adult?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
