I used to have Netflix, but then I got rid of it when I realized I spent more time browsing for good things to watch than actually watching. A part of me just likes looking at everything and seeing my options without having to commit to anything. I procrastinate on things that I do when I procrastinate. So here's a list of shows and movies that you might not have known Netflix had.
1. Black Mirror
This is my favorite television show of all time. If you like shocking twists and meaningful messages, this is the right show for you. It's so unpredictable yet predictive; some of the premises have actually started to come true.
Check out this article for the best order to watch Black Mirror Episodes in.
2. The Office
After throwing yourself into the pit of despair that is Black Mirror, watch the funniest show that has ever aired. You know when you "lol" but with a straight face alone in your room? This show will actually make you laugh out loud.
Hint: skip to the 2nd season if you're on a crunch for time.
3. Kubo and the Two Strings
I don't even like animated movies but I really liked Kubo. The animation is really beautiful, so even if you don't like the plot it is still pleasing to look at. But the plot is really good and it's a great family movie.
4. Friends
Netflix has all the seasons of Friends!
5. V for Vendetta
Made by the same people who made the Matrix, V for Vendetta is so unique, well written and powerful. It has action, romance, and deep meaning, making it an absolute must see.
It's about anarchists defying the government, so basically what all Americans want to do right now.
6. Nightcrawler
Jake Gyllenhaal is an amazing actor. His character, Lou, is absolutely psychotic, and Gyllenhaal's performance adds to Lou's creepy and cringey personality.
The movie also has a great plot twist at the end. The movie shows an exaggerated dark example of someone chasing the elusive American Dream.
7. Array of Spanish Movies for brushing up on your language skills
Here are just a few examples. They're from Spain, so everything "th-ound-th like thi-th" and they talk really fast, but it's great practice. To be honest the romantic plots are mediocre at best but it's sort of entertaining and better than reading a textbook.
8. Dr. Strange
9. Sherlock
My second favorite show! Sherlock has ruined movies and other television shows for me because nothing can match its writing (except for Black Mirror) and its cinematography. There is nothing as well directed as Sherlock.
10. The Imitation Game
Set during the World War II era, this movie is based on the true life story of Alan Turing, who was gay and brilliant. He and his team decoded German messages and was responsible for an early end to WWII.
For when you want to watch a deep, heart-wrenching movie filled with stellar performances.
11. Inglorious Basterds
Set in World War II, this Tarantino movie sort of re-writes history a bit, but it's still realistic. Warning: bloody.
12. Memento
Memento argues that for the most desperate of us to continue to live, we need a reason. It's directed by Christopher Nolan, so you know it's going to be good.
13. Schlinder's List
A classic Holocaust movie that I was surprised was on Netflix.
14. Finding Dory
Watch when you are feeling sad from watching Schlinder's List.
