What's It Like Being a Twin?

No, we're not identical.

What's It Like Being a Twin?
McKenzie Julian

I have a twin sister. Many people think being a twin is the most fascinating thing on earth. I guess it is pretty rare. Only about 4-5% of the population of the US is made up of twins. So, for all you non-twin people out there, this is what it's like being a twin.

1. People always ask, "What's it like being a twin?"

I cannot tell you how many people have asked this question, and I cannot say how many times I have failed to give a good answer. Why? Because to me it's normal, and I don't know what it's like not being a twin, so there's nothing for me to compare it to. It's like someone is asking, "What's it like to have brown hair?" I don't know, it just is what it is.

2. Strangers stop to ask if you're twins.

Everywhere my sister and I go, we're always stopped by people who want to know if we're twins. People are always so amazed. Then they follow up with countless of other questions: Who's older? How do you tell the difference? What's it like?

3. You can't wear similar outfits.

There have been so many mornings where my sister and I walk out of our rooms wearing similar outfits or the exact same shirt. The problem is that neither of us wants to change, so we then argue who technically wore it first. Eventually, neither of us change, so we go out "twinning," and all our friends proceed to tease us because "the twins are twinning." Now, however, since my twin and I are at different colleges, we don't really have to worry about it. Still, there are many days that we snapchat each other just to see each other wearing the exact same shirt. We just can't escape it.

4. People stare.

This one can be a little uncomfortable. A lot of the times, people like to put us next to each other and stare at us to try to find differences in our faces. So we just stand there awkwardly while they look at us without saying anything. I get why they do it, but still, sometimes it's just really awkward.

At the end of the day, despite the fights, arguments, and the stubborn refusals to change outfits, being a twin is probably the best thing on earth. You two have a special bond that no one else does. You always have someone to talk to, someone who understands everything, someone you have spent every second with (literally, even since before birth), and someone who will laugh at how bad your jokes are. Love ya, sis.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
