What Your Spotify Playlist Names Really Mean

From "Turn Up" to "Throwback," we all know what's in there

Everyone has those playlists they hope no one ever sees. Whether it be embarrassing hip hop music you jammed out to in 7th grade or sappy love songs you listen to when you're lonely, all your playlists say a little something about you. Here are a few interpretations of the basics:

“Turn Up”

First things first, delete this title immediately. We understand you’re about to go out and party and probably have just the raddest time, filled with endless snap stories that no one will watch nor care about, but you can do so in a less obnoxious way. A playlist like this will most likely include a few Schoolboy Q songs, 2 Chainz and Mac, probably two Kid Cudi’s, that one B.o.B. song, and enough trap music to make your ears bleed. If you’re stuck trying to decide what to name a killer playlist such as that one, instead of the overused “Turn Up,” maybe try something like “My taste in music is equivalent to how sick my snapback is” or “These songs are as sweet as my Axe body spray.”

“Workout”

We all have those upbeat songs that make the dauntless task of working out tolerable. I honestly wouldn’t do it if I couldn’t listen to music. However, the spectrum of music in a playlist like this is huge. On one hand you have the girl on level 3 of the elliptical, not breaking a sweat, dressed in head to toe Lululemon. She could have anything on that playlist from Rihanna’s top hits to like those six popular rap songs on the radio that she couldn’t name the artist of but just loves. Counterly, you have the beefy guy in the gym who’s clearly skipping more leg days than he should. He would probably just have a lot of Drake and Kanye, and again probably those six pop rap songs just because they’re catchy as hell.

“Chill”

You’ll find plenty of alternative music on this playlist, most of which discovered by that one cool friend you have who has good taste in music and makes you feel hipster. There will also most likely be your basic John Mayer, Coldplay, and Adele. If you’re listening to this playlist you are either staying in for the night and relaxing or trying to get in touch with your inner self and contemplating deep and meaningful life questions. You should be warned, when listening to this music you may contract feelings of self doubt and uneasiness mixed with self reflection and tranquillity.

“Throwback”

1, 2 Step, Toxic, Fergalicious, Get Low, Ignition, Stacy’s Mom, and Hollaback Girl, just a few of the highlights of our past that never really seem to leave us thanks to playlists like these. There’s always a real sense of community created when an Usher or R. Kelly song comes on and everyone is basically forced to sing at each others faces. This is the music we grew up on and will someday share with our kids, no matter how embarrassing. Throwbacks bring back uneventful, yet somehow still exciting middle school memories and how much we thought Avril Lavigne’s songs related to our lives while sitting in a language arts class next to the boy we were in love with but never actually talked to. Everyone needs a good throwback playlist to commemorate the music that shaped their pasts.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
