So you’re studying at the library, in the office, or maybe just at home and you decide to take a quick break and log onto your Facebook – A Facebook that looks a lot different than it did at its launch in 2004. So what exactly is different about it? What are you seeing in the year of 2016?
1. Farmville/Candy Crush Invites
Yes! Just what you wanted! As if the first 499 times you received a Candy Crush invite from your next-door neighbor or maybe that one kid from high school wasn’t enough – you get the 500th invite in your notifications waiting for you, just begging you to click on it. At this point, you feel like throwing your laptop right out the window and watching it crash and burn.
2. Facebook Statuses
Not that Facebook statuses are anything new exactly, but the nature of these statuses seem to have shifted. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and even a status or two once in a while is bearable, but when your feed is taken up by the same friend posting about politics, social issues, and they're offended by everything, it gets to be a little bit much and their opinion begins to lose its power.
3. Seven Second Recipes
This is one of the reasons I still login to my Facebook. You’re scrolling down your feed and boom! There it is. A simple seven second video from heaven showing you a food concoction you didn’t know was possible. Five of your friends have all shared it and are definitely going to make it and then devour it the next time you all hang.
4. Notification from Grandma
It's no secret that Facebook has spread to nearly all ages now. You have six new notifications from Grandma! Grandma’s got a Facebook and she learned how to use it rather quickly. Comments and likes on statuses and pictures across the board and every comment signed off with “Nana XOXO.” And on a more personal level, she thinks you’re dating every girl you’re in a picture with even though she’s been told again and again, “Girls just aren’t my cup of tea.” But you simply have to love your grandma and be happy for her because she’s using technology and using it really well!
5. Friend Requests
Now it’s always a little bit of a surprise when you see that red little number 1 in your friend requests. There are so many other social media platforms that have become more popular in the past couple of years, i.e. Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. In social media nowadays, friending someone on Facebook is almost as outdated as calling someone on your flip-phone.
AND EVEN STILL…
While Facebook isn’t the ideal social media platform, we still have our Facebook accounts and check them now and then. Why? I think the main reason is the insane amount of pictures we have and don’t want to lose. But we also like to see what everyone is up to or at least was up to on the original, popular social network. Even with all your flaws, Facebook, we still hold a place for you in our hearts.
