It's Not About What You Don't Have, It's About What You Do

Even when life gets hard, you should still stop and appreciate all you have.

It's Not About What You Don't Have, It's About What You Do
Sammi Karleskint

To say I had a bad week would be an understatement. I saw hate fill the world, and devastation take over. I also found out that I may be losing my job. I arrived back to my room after a long day of classes, collapsed on the couch, and sighed. I was dissatisfied with my life. As I was moping, I kept feeling sorry for myself. Something then caught my eye. I looked out the window with amazement, and I could not believe my eyes. Outside of my window, sat three homeless men. They were smiling, laughing, and simply enjoying each other's company. I began feeling disgusted in myself. I felt like an ungrateful, spoiled brat. I have so much, but chose to sulk and focus on all the bad in my life. These men inspired me. It was a week until Thanksgiving, and they were taking advantage of the season. I made it my goal to be a better person and a more appreciative person of the life I have. I took time to see all of the good in my life, and I sought inspiration from real people. This is what I found:

Young men have BIG thanks!

These women were such amazing and generous people. They reminded me to be thankful for what you have because life is all too precious.

He reminded me that police officers are people too. They are great people who can be funny just like everyone else, and we should appreciate all of the hard work they do.

Those who work in hospitals are selfless and humble. Even with all of the hard work they do, they were kind enough to take time out and show me what they are thankful for.

I learned that not everything you are thankful for has to be tangible.

It is great to be thankful for your favorite teams.

We should be thankful for all things life has to offer.

You should be thankful for those who raised you, and made you into the incredible person you are

This made me smile because too often, I forget how beautiful a conversation can be.

This man showed me even when life is not easy, and you may not have everything you want, there is still so much to be thankful for.

They let me interrupt their meal, and were two truly amazing people! They showed me true compassion and reminded me that there are great people in this world.

Too often we hear negative comments about teenagers in our society. I hear that they are ungrateful and consumed with technology. These two, ended those stereotypes. It was touching to see young people care so much about the people in their lives.

That there are always opportunities to learn, and we should be thankful for those who lead us to new knowledge.

The little things in life can make all the difference.

I met strangers, smiled, laughed, and came upon some powerful realizations this week. If two young boys are thankful for something as simple as rocks, I have so much in life to be thankful for. This week, I was a happier person. Being thankful made it almost impossible to have bad days. Even when the real world would try to stomp on my happiness, being thankful preserved it. I live a beautiful life. I have hardships, just like everyone in this world does, but I learned that these hardships are not worth bringing me down. They are teaching me lessons, and making me stronger. For that, I am thankful.

I am thankful for the beach. I am thankful for Ellen DeGeneres videos that make me crack up every time. I am thankful for the roof over my head, my comfortable bed, food, and health. I am thankful for coffee, that gets me through late night study hours. I am thankful for so much I could go on forever, but I will let the picture below sum it all up.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
