For the first time in a few years, I was completely free the night of the Billboard Music Awards. Sick in bed, I had nothing better to do but watch the huge event live that essentially sums up this year in music. Not much has changed in the last year, with the exception of a few new and noteworthy artists. But to stay up-to-date, here is what you missed at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards.
1. Ciara's legs.
From the very start of the show, Ciara's legs were the only thing anyone was talking about. Ciara and Ludacris did a great job cohosting, although it doesn't take much to introduce performance after performance. If you remember anything from this award show, remember Ciara's mile-long legs, because I know I will.
2. Britney Spears' tribute to lip-syncing.
Don't get me wrong, I love Britney. I sang along to every word, and apparently, so did she. Knowing that Spears performs almost every night in Las Vegas, there should have been just a little bit higher expectations for tonight's highly publicized musical act. All I request is some real Britney song and dance along with my favorite lyrics. Is that too much to ask?
3. Sequins on sequins on sequins.
Between Meghan Trainor and the Fifth Harmony girls, there were plenty of sequins to go around. Both performances had catchy songs and decent vocals. We know they all could've done so much better, but we love to dance along anyway.
4. Pink's signature acrobatics.
Pink wowed yet again with her signature acrobatics while singing her new single, "Just Like Fire." This song is set to feature in Tim Burton’s upcoming "Alice in Wonderland" sequel, "Alice Through the Looking Glass." Every time Pink swings over the crowd I hope she doesn't fall but she seems to have this flying thing down to a science after all these years.
5. The more Adele the better.
Adele released her new single "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)" tonight in between winning two awards. It's upbeat, yet still boasts the classic Adele belting. In this slightly trippy music video, we get to live in a world where there is not just one Adele, but 10.
6. Kesha's return to the spotlight.
Kesha received a standing ovation for the most honest performance of the night. Her tribute to Bob Dylan truly showed what we've been missing the last three years. It has been a rough year for Kesha, but her strength and determination shined through while she sang "It Ain't Me, Babe."
7. Celine Dion is an angel.
This isn't shocking news. She is every mom's guilty pleasure. Celine Dion definitely deserved her Icon award. Her speech was emotional, and she had the pleasure of sharing the stage with her son. As always, it was a pleasure to listen to Dion but the show must go on.
8. Madonna's tribute to Prince.
Many were skeptical of the choice to give Madonna the honor of this tribute. She proved her critics wrong and gave a well-executed performance for the late Prince. Almost exactly one month after his death, the Billboard Awards couldn't pass up a chance to honor the star who changed music. There's nothing like some "Purple Rain" to bring thousands of people together.
Overall, this was a pretty good way to spend three hours. The Billboard Music Awards was a roller coaster of good and bad performances, each one more questionable than the last. But we all love it, even if we love to hate it. Now we wait until next year's show.
