Spring pledge may only happen for a number of sororities on campus but if you're involved with rushing it is an entirely different story. Lots of "girl flirting: and small talk happen so bonus points if you're into that but be well advised if you aren't. During spring rush week you meet the girls, learn about the philanthropy and figure out if you mesh well with their values. Although you learn a lot there were a multitude of things that I wish I knew before I had accepted my bid to my sorority.
Being in a sorority is VERY time consuming
Between study hours, new member education, chapter dinner and meeting other sisters, there is little time in between. This isn't a bad thing if you want to divulge yourself into greek life but as someone who has extracurriculars outside of sorority life, it can be hard to manage. Be sure that you're not putting all your eggs in one basket so to speak. Making a schedule and sectioning off time for each task will be your friend throughout your active member life and college career.
It can also be VERY costly
Factoring in all of the clothes that you'll have to purchase onto your college tuition and then topping it off with sorority fees, greek life can be pretty costly. There are cool shirts to buy for all of the philanthropy events you attend, clothes to buy for date dashes and formals, and also the required outfits for rush week. Shopping for all of these clothes is very fun but can also take a hefty toll on the wallet. Knowing your sorority fees and having some wiggle room in your budget for purchasing outfits is essential for being in greek life.
They value your education
One of the stereotypes that sorority girls are stigmatized by is that they're dumb and don't care about their grades. Even before you get your bid, the sorority that you're rushing will check your grade point average. Even after you get that bid from your desired sorority, they still check grades. You must submit midterm grades and final grades to determine how your semester is going or went. Having a great overall average will make your chapter happy.
You'll meet lots of people and makes lots of friends
There are so many girls in the chapter that like the same things and have the same values that it is hard not to make friends. Value all of the girls in your pledge class since you're all in the same boat and they understand what you're going through. Also, make friends with some of the upperclassmen and girls who have been in the chapter for a while, they have lots of insight and can be a guiding hand.
Value your time as a pledge
It's a fun and exciting time where you'll be dipping your feet into what it's like to be involved in greek life. Learning the values and traditions that the chapter is involved with is actually kind of interesting. It'll make you value the sisterhood more.
