5 Things I WIll Miss About College

Losing some perks as I enter my final semester

As I start my last semester of college I find myself both eager to leave and eager to stay. I want to see what the world has in store for me and take a big step forward, yet I like being comfortable at college. Even though I have a feeling that my final semester will be boring, I thought I'd mention a few things that I will miss about college other than some of the obvious things like the people.

1. Sleeping in late

When you get to make your own schedule you feel like a boss, there's no other way to put it. Sleep in 'til 11 am? No problem! Have one whole day free? Sure thing! For four years we've all been pampered and got to sleep in, but now when we start working we have to get up early. Waking up at 5 am, 6 am, or 7 am to get in to work at 8 or 9 am takes some getting used to. After waking up early for elementary, middle, and high school, we all had it with being exhausted and we got a four-year break, but now we have to do it all over again. Maybe I'll sleep in until 1 PM this semester just because I can and because I know it won't happen in the future.

2. Seeing your friends every day/every minute

In college, we take it for granted that we will see our friends every day and can meet up with them in five minutes tops, but a lot of us are forgetting that we probably won't see our friends as much as we like once we start work. Sure our colleagues at work will start becoming friends with us, but seeing your home and college friends is always the best! If you're lucky you'll see them once a week unless they're never available to begin with. It's even worse if your college friends live nowhere near you so expect to see them every few months. Hang out with your college and home friends as much as you can before college ends no matter how annoying, fun, unavailable, or chill they are because you will definitely start seeing them less when things get serious!

3.Being awake past 10 pm

Okay, this point is similar to the first one, but waking up early also means sleeping early. Do not try to stay up until 11, 12, 1, or 2 am like I do in college once you start working because you will be exhausted. Once you start waking up early for work each day and commuting, you won't have the energy to stay up past 10 pm. Take it from someone who commuted to New York City from Staten Island for three months in the summer for an internship.

4. Only having to write papers

Writing papers was never really a problem for me since I'm a writing major, but they do become an annoyance every now and then, especially if you aren't good at writing them, but you'll want to only write papers once school is done. Think about it, we've done papers for so long now that we've basically mastered them. No matter where you work, you're going to have to do something you've never done before or on a regular basis which is always intimidating. Even though I will be writing wherever I work because its my major, there's going to be way harder things that I'll have to do that college hasn't prepared us for! I don't know about you, but I'm gonna appreciate being comfortable and unchallenged for as long as I can before doing something at work that'll totally scare me!

5. Being in a classroom setting

As weird as it sounds, I will miss having classes. Its the last time I'll ever have to take classes or be in school ever and its a really weird feeling. I probably won't miss it when the semester starts picking up, but I think I certainly will after the fact. We're always going to learn something in life, but its the last time to learn something in school! It feels like a piece of your life has ended. While it will great to finally be done, it will be weird to finally be done with something that you've done essentially since you were born. I guess we have an insane amount of years of work to look forward to!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
