What was the march truly about?
On January 21st, the first Women’s March was held since the 1970s. This march is supposed to highlight the fight of feminism everywhere. The fight for equal rights throughout all of America for EVERYONE.
Feminism (n): the advocacy of women’s rights on the basis of the equality of sexes.
Above is the dictionary definition of feminism. True feminism is not all women hating men; instead it is for focusing on the equality between men and women. It is to bring attention to the fact that women still get paid less than men and are judged based on simply the clothes they are wearing. The original Women’s March (not from this Saturday) was meant to highlight these things and focus on the rights of women everywhere. The last time the march was held was in the 70’s, until now.
So why did it take until 2017 for it to happen again? And did the march actually support these feminism points?
This past Saturday, following President Trump’s inauguration, there were Women’s Marches all over the U.S. A march that is suppose to represent equality, instead turned into an anti-Trump march, separating America.
Before I continue, I want to point out that I understand that there were women/men marching for the correct reason. There were quite a few that weren’t. Instead, they turned from the thought of love and showed hate towards the man that we should all be supporting to help this country succeed.
All over social media, signs claiming how awful a person President Trump is were able to be seen. Riots started, awful things were shouted, and the person to blame was somehow the new President. But how? While I am not claiming that he is a perfect man, but he is also not the devil. Women’s marches have been taking place since the 1700’s, since before our new President was born. Therefore, the problem of women’s rights is probably not all his fault. So why was there so much hate directed towards him?
I am a female who used to claim the title of a feminist, but recently has began to think twice about it. I have begun to think twice because people are starting to lose the true meaning of being a feminist. I believe in equality, but that does not mean I hate our President. That does not mean that I will walk in a march that was filled with hate, and the only love that was found was through loving others that would hate with you.
We live in a country that needs to be united, instead of separated by marches and protests. We live in a country where equality matters and so does every single life, including the President that so many seem to hate. We live in a country where there needs to be more love than hate, and yet the “Love Trumps Hate” slogan has been bringing more hate than anything.
The women’s march was for a great meaning of equality, but did the hatred of the President actually cover the true meaning of it?
