What to talk about besides School, Relationships, and Work this Holiday Season

"No Grandma, I have not found a guy who can deal with my sass yet."

Ah, the Holidays. The time where we come home to our families to only be badgered about our school life, social life, and relationship status. The three things no college student wants to answer over break.

Instead of answering these dreadful questions over and over as each family member arrives, talk about these topics instead:

1. The election. This may be a good or bad idea depending on your family. The attention will certainly be diverted away from you so you can enjoy your turkey or ham in peace.

2. Latest Fashion Trends: Baggy sweaters are still in! Great idea to drop holiday gift hints. Show grandma that sweater from H&M that you've had your eye on.

3. History: Ask Grandma or Grandpa to tell you a story about the time they lived in. There are so many vast differences and they will be in their glory talking about their days. How did they contact their friends to hang out? What did they do before cell phones? The answers will have them talking for hours!

4. Sports: Football, Basketball, and Hockey. If your family members each have different favorite teams this can get interesting! Slurp down your mashed potatoes while smashing your Dad's favorite team and justifying your team.

5. Technology: Time to drop more hints about Christmas gifts! The newest macbook? Justify to your family why it's so totally worth every penny. Iphone 7? Justify that one too! Need a new charger or phone case?

6. Summer plans: It is never too early to begin to make plans for the summer. Taking a family trip? begin talking about what you're packing and where you will go to eat.

7. Christmas Cards: Try pointing out to your family that this year you should send out a photo Christmas card so that everyone can see your wonderfully photogenic dog. Who cares what you look like Mom and Dad? The point of the card is the dog.

8. Literally anything besides school: Does school keep getting brought up? Try this answer: "School is hard, but I'm doing my best. I'd rather not talk about school on my break away from school. Thank you for your interest though, I know you care."

The holidays are a tough time for students. We want to see our cousins, drink, eat and be merry without causing family rift.

Is everyone sitting around on their smart phones? Take out Cards Against Humanity or Pie Face! You will not regret playing Cards Against Humanity with your Grandma!

Happy Holidays everyone and I hope this helps!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
