The Iowa Caucus has always been the most anticipated part of a Presidential Election beside the election itself. The caucus is the first way for each party to elect which candidate they want representing them. So here's a few takeaways from the caucus which happened Feb. 1.
1. Trump got second place.
Yep, you heard that right. Whether you refused to believe he would do this well, or believed polls that he was far ahead, this shocks everyone. He was always the first in polls until Cruz starting gaining on him, but no one thought Cruz would win by this margin. Trump later tweeted "Because I was told I could not do well in Iowa, I spent very little there--a fraction of Cruz and Rubio. Came in strong second. Great honor." Sure, Trump...that's an excuse.
2. Bernie and Hillary nearly tied.
Can't say this is nearly as shocking; however, most thought Hillary would have a strong lead based solely off name recognition. But, Sanders has sure put his name on the map. Clinton may have actually had voters against her, due to the name recognition. It's hard to run as President when you have your husband's wrongdoings loom. Not to mention several people believe her to just be "Obama's third term." Whatever the reasoning, the democratic race is closer than ever. On a side note, Clinton is the first woman to ever win the Iowa Caucus.
3. Carson needed clean clothes.
You read that right. Carson left the night of the Caucus to return to Florida to get new clothes and a momentum to go into the next caucus. No telling if this helped or hurt him considering his percent was very minuscule. But, this did bring up the fact that some Cruz people were spreading lies that Carson dropped out of the race. Which leads me to the last take away...
4. Cruz won.
In a very close Republican race, Cruz pulled away in the Iowa Caucus. He was followed by Trump in second followed by a third place Rubio. This may not come as a surprise for many considering he was always on top or closely related in most polls, but he won't by a margin of 4 percent.
As every election phase, the candidates are now moving on the New Hampshire to take to the second state to vote for their front runners.
Happy voting!
