What To Do When You're Sick Of Politics

The election season is kicking into high gear, and I'm going to tell you how to best ignore it.

What To Do When You're Sick Of Politics
Daily Mail

The presidential race is really beginning to ramp up. Our two biggest stars, the presumptive nominees, are all but guaranteed to be running one of the biggest races America has ever seen this fall. Donald Trump in one corner, the dangerous and charismatic Republican nominee, whose fiery rhetoric has polarized voters across the country. Hillary Clinton, the safe and reserved heavyweight, a master of politics and persuasion who is supported by virtually everyone in the Democratic party. Then there's an ever more disillusioned populace, a voter base uncertain it wants to vote for either candidate. It seems like every day you hear another young American say, "Can I vote for neither?"

Overall, it's making many of us sick to our stomachs. Wasn't the primary race enough? Now we have to start on the presidential race? After such a grueling nomination, where two candidates it seemed nobody really wanted to win (but who were the only real options for some) rose to the top, and are now shadow boxing at each other, charcoal lines under their eyes and big red gloves being fit on their fists. Some of us, like Scorcese, think "And they call this sport," ruefully shaking our heads and shutting our ears so we don't have to listen to it.

So what do we do when we are sick of politics?

There's a few solutions. One is to turn off all internet until the election. The most egregious part of an election season has definitely become going on Facebook and seeing the vicious political posts from your peers. The phrase "Can't we all just get along?" pops to mind. It seems like everyone's pretty good friends until somebody says, "Make America great again!" At which point you or somebody with the bravery and patience to enter into a dreaded "online argument" must tell them why they are wrong, why their candidate is wrong, and why they are a bad person. The best panacea for the horrendous "political state" Facebook adopts during election season is to just turn it off. Don't go. You know it will suck you in. You know it will depress you. Just don't go!

Alright, you've quit Facebook and every other social media outlet (especially Tumblr) because you just can't stand it anymore. Great, not only are you depriving yourself of political stress, but you're probably getting out more, too. Life isn't just a computer screen, you know. But it's not quite over yet. To fill the void no internet leaves in your life, you might be tempted to watch television. Don't! This is a common misconception. Television is a breeding ground for commercials, infomercials, newscasts, and pundits. All focused on that thing we just can't stand to hear about: Politics. Nothing is more annoying that a political commercial. "This ad was sponsored by the Hillary Clinton for President foundation blah blah blah." I don't want to hear it! The only reasonable solution is to keep the tube off for the remainder of the election season. Television: Not even once.

So, after abandoning the internet and kicking the tube, are we now free from election season politics? Unfortunately, you already know the answer. There is still a bastion for political annoyance. You guessed it: outside. Signs and posters litter street corners, sidewalks, lawns- the political machine has corrupted the Earth itself. You can't drive down the highway without seeing a billboard ad, or down the street without seeing a "Trump 2016" sign. It's sickening. There's only one solution. Don't go outside. Don't just avoid the signs or the billboards, either, because wherever you go, you might encounter the only thing worse than an online political opinion: An in-person political opinion. Someone is bound to ask you who you are voting for this fall. It's too dangerous. Don't go out. Just don't. And if you talk to people on the phone, make sure you trust them to not bring up politics. You might have to severely shrink your friend group. That's okay, it's a natural part of pretending there is no presidential race.

Alright, so you're staying inside, abandoning television, and saying goodbye to The Internet. You're pretty much safe now. If you need something to do, you could probably listen to radio. Just try and find a station that doesn't play political ads. Break out the old VHS player too, while you're at it. Spend some time in your backyard maybe. You've successfully skirted the tide of election season politics! Now you don't have to deal with it for another four years! When the time comes again, you'll be ready.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
