1. Remain Calm
This might be the most difficult one, but it’s the most necessary. Panicking will only make it harder to think and use logic to get out rather than acting on your emotions. Control your breathing so you don’t hyperventilate. Just remember three seconds: Breath in three seconds, hold it three seconds, breath out three seconds.
2. Get Out
It may seem easier to just freeze up and hide, but experts say that it’s better to run if you see a way out. The sooner the better. Visualize your movements in advance so you have a plan. Leave your belongings behind. Use cover, something you think will stop a bullet or at least keep you out of sight. Make use of emergency exits; most restaurants have back exits in kitchens and stock rooms. Be sure to warn others that you encounter.
3. Hide
If you can’t get to an exit, try to find a room or small, confined room space you can get to. Then secure the location. Lock or barricade the doors and turn off the lights. Move away from any windows and silent your cell phones. Then hide behind a large item such as a cabinet or desk. Stay there and remain calm. Most active shooter situations are over in 10-15 minutes.
4. Assist the Injured If Safe to Do So
Once again, remember to stay calm. If you stay calm, the better chance the victim will stay calm. Remember, when police arrive on scene their first responsibility is to stop the shooter. When they have done that, then medical responders will arrive on scene.

5. Call 911
Even if you cannot speak, leave the line open and allow the dispatcher to listen. If you can, it’s important that you provide the number of active shooters, a physical description, location, type of weapon and number of potential victims.
6. Defend Yourself as a Last Resort
If you cannot escape or shelter in place, you may have to defend yourself as a last resort. Almost anything can be turned into an improvised weapon. Look for anything that compromises the gunman’s ability to see, breathe or control their weapon. Be sure you commit to your actions.
7. Keep Your Hands Visible
Police are on high alert when they enter the scene of a gunman. Do not run towards them even if it is to thank them. Avoid pointing, screaming and quick movements. Keep your hands visible and don’t make any sudden moves. Don’t do anything that might make you come across as a suspect.
