Over the past weekend my sorority’s chapter just had their initiation. We have welcomed in several new girls into our sisterhood with open arms and open hearts. With these lovely ladies we will share our traditions, our history, and our friendships. When recruiting new ladies to join a sisterhood, everything gets sugar coated. We tell them the truth but with a positive light on certain things. Joining a sorority was the best thing I ever did but there are a few things they don’t tell you about when you join one:
1. Sorority Sisters Fight With Each Other.
The majority of women who join a sorority are looking for that sisterhood. That everlasting bond of friendship that will never end. By joining a sorority you will undoubtedly get that, but like biological sisters, fights still happen. No matter which sisters are fighting you become a part of it. It’s extremely uncomfortable and frustrating but here’s the thing: we make up. At the end of the day we are there for each other and will continue to love one another. You will learn to forgive and move on when you are in a sorority. At the end of the day we are all sisters and are together as one.
2. They Will Be Your Friends For Life
While this one is said very often, I didn’t truly believe it. It’s a really nice thought but I didn’t see this happening to me really. Out of my friends in high school I only still talk to one of them. However after I joined my sorority I found out just how true this really is. My Big is an alum that went to my school years ago. We have a larger age gap than most but I still love her to death, and I wouldn’t have her in my life without my sorority. I still talk to the girls who have recently graduated and I know that we will continue to keep in touch in years to come. The truest fact is that your sorority never truly leaves you. You always have connections and you always have your chapter as your roots. Our sisterhood runs deep in our veins and we will always be a phone call away.
3. You Will Grow Into A Leader
I knew about the philanthropy and fundraisers and I knew some girls had chairs such as President and Vice President, but I never knew how much you grow in your chapter. There are a ton of positions to hold within a sorority and each will teach you resource management, social skills, how to delegate, and communicate with the community. I never thought I would grow into a leader and a better person when joining a sorority.
4. The Long Nights
Being in a sorority takes a lot of time commitment, from learning your chapter's history to fundraising, to completing sisterhoods. There have been philanthropies that take up your whole nights and sometimes weekends. Ceremonies last hours and don't even talk to me about recruitment week. Joining a sorority doesn't just mean wearing letters and having somewhere to go on the weekends. It's a huge time commitment! But nothing I have ever done has been so worth it.
In my final year it's heartbreaking knowing I will be leaving my chapter soon, but I couldn't be more proud of the sisters I will be leaving behind.
